All that gear should of been used in jaws to catch it

Why would they do that? They’re fishing to research, not for sport. Using rod and reel would be so fucking stupid and pointless for this type of fishing. Increase the likely of the shark getting away, increases the likelihood the shark dies from exhaustion do to a longer fight, increases the time it takes to catch it, etc etc.

I'm sure it's quite stressful for the shark. For one thing, they have to puncture the animal's mouth and jaw with a hook with a barb in it. I'm sure that being of paramount importance for the animal's survival, the mouth and jaw are quite hardy, but nonetheless they are injuring it. Would like to do a little research to find out just how quickly the tissue regenerates around the mouth.

No nerve ending in the mouth in most fish, so no “pain” is experienced by animal

What about the hook? Is it removed while in the cradle? Or does it rust out quickly?
@j.j.schlachtfeld9325

It's removed while in the cradle. They use circle hooks, which only hook onto exposed surfaces (mostly the corner of the mouth) and thus do the animals no harm. They have also a significantly lower risk of being accidentally swallowed than traditional J-hooks, which could potentially lead to organ and/or gill damage. These guys are really good at what they do and always use the best gear available in order to not harm the animals that they very much care for.
