Good job Clay not letting that mule win. I grew up on a horse farm btw, and if you keep a short catch rope hanging on a young horse or mule’s halter at first, it makes catching them go a lot easier and smoother. You don’t have to get close to their head with your hands and you got something to hang onto if they back away. You can use a feed bucket and when the animal starts eating out of it, just nonchalantly pick up the catch rope. If the animal won’t come to feed you can walk up to it slowly with a stick or something, hook it around the catch rope and bring the rope to hand. Most of the time the the animal will not even realize it’s been “caught” therefore it avoids any conditioning to catch drama. A catch rope should be a thickish rope that hangs a couple inches above the ground when the animal is standing at ease. It also gets an animal use to ropes flapping about its head, legs, and body. Of course, any animal with a halter and catch rope on it should be monitored frequently.

"Trio of Green Mammals" I love this. I like how you are learning along with the mule. Can't wait to see the rest of the playlist.

You should brush your mules off before you saddle them. Love this series by the way!

You do a perfect job . I wached many videos you are the best . Iam from the Atlas Mountains in Morocco when i was a child one of our neighbors was the person who trained young mules for most of famillies of the village . I used to watch how he used to do it . Thanks for the video

You did wonderful. I always consider the highest tier of training (with dogs anyway, as I am not able to have horses and dont know anybody who will let me hang out with their equines). They want to be influenced and discouraged.

Great that you didn't let her get away with that. You might have cut your time down by removing the other mule from sight so that you were her only option for a 'friend'.

Haha... You did a good job though. Keep at it, you certainly have the feeling and it is only practice what makes it perfect. Lovely mules, are they quarter horse?

To put a horse in a position where it is able to carry a human, you need to train it to build up muscles and to desensitize it. I found this video series by chance and I am watching this without sound. From what I see and read I am not convinced. It appears to me that the mules do not trust their handler. As is stated in the infobox, the person shown has no prior experience. Therefore, I am questioning there value of this experiment. It appears to me that the mule in focus is put through h lot of discomfort

Schwipp Schwappschwupp love your Name :D ps I think that he does too much in the first time too much pressure everyday.. In my opinion its better to train three times per week that gives the animal time to think. (Are you from Germany?)

Schwipp Schwappschwupp - I wouldn't worry so much. These are not teddy bears for little girls or the porcelain figures of grand ma. Horses and specially mules are quite tough animals, which won't break with this gentle and easy going treatment and a medium weight rider. Desensitizing against petty things takes a few minutes and the little discomfort that you mention is doing precisely that. However, building muscle and desensitizing for just about anything takes at least two years of regular work. Nobody is going to wait all that time before using the horse or mule for ordinary work, and it really is not necessary. If you ask me, I'd say that this guy makes a lot of mistakes but he certainly has the feeling for treating with horses and mules and communicating with them. He is not ill-treating nor infringing pain nor traumatizing those animals in any way. So, all in all, in my opinion this is a great video that everyone should simply enjoy and learn from it. :)

You HAVE to start somewhere dude. Desensitization starts with overcoming discomfort. You think any horse or mule is comfortable its first time handled or saddled? Hell fuckin' no. Would you trust a guy you only met a few weeks ago? No, you wouldn't. Neither of these animals are in danger or being abused. Saddle breaking and groundwork are accomplished when the discomfort is no longer an issue or causes discomfort.
