Shady Camp is spot on the Mary River and is just West of Kakadu National Park. Shady is legendary and considered a mecca for sport fisherman wanting to catch large Barramundi. Shady is also infamous for having the largest concentration of Estuarine Crocodiles (Salties) in Australia. The average concentration of Crocs, colloquially known as Snapping Geckos, is five per square kilometre where Shady boasts around 15 per square kilometre!!
This was our first trip to Shady and we learned a lot. The advice we were given is to know your tides as you don't want to get stranded out there with that many Crocs about. You can't fish all tides and you'll only get a few hours at the most before you run out of water. Also, take a big net so you do get too close to the water when boating your fish. And when you release fish, don't swim them with you hand in the water as you may lose it...
