I was fishing cherry beach, in Long Beach one morning and this old man (on a diamond jig) caught a 49" halibut off the beach! The mouth was huge! Theres pics of it at one of the local tackle shops down there. It was at least 3" thick or more in the center. I saw him fighting it and ran over, he tossed me a 2' gaff and asked me to bring it out of the water. I couldn't believe my eyes! He was stoked! He said "my wife never gonna believe this" and it reminded me of Quint on Jaws, taxidermy man gonna have a heart attack when he sees what Im bringin him.

is 15 pound braided line strong enough? I'm new to fishing so I'm not sure what line to use
@fightmilk8613
2 жыл бұрын
Sure is! You can fish straight braid if you want to but the general consensus is to use a leader. The braid with allow you to cast farther and it’s easier to manage than floro and mono because it has no memory - it will also last a lot longer. If you do fish straight braid keep in mind that you will want to loosen your drag a little more than you would with a mono or floro leader because the braid does not stretch. If you are going to be setting the hook yourself the braid is going to exert more pressure on the hook so keep that in mind especially if you are using smaller hooks as they would be more likely to bend out or get ripped out of the fishes mouth. Enjoy!!

Nice job Rodney, although you can catch flatties in the surf all year long, the sheer numbers this time of year are not there. Most of the halibut have moved back out to deeper water. 500 casts covers alot of sand. Halibut spawn and go shallow late may and early june which also coincides with water temp warming from 59/62 to 64/67 give or take a few degrees. I fished them alot in the late 70's early 80's. ( lots of fish, no pressure) they do pile up thick during that spawn time. Nice vid👍

@@RodneyMarquezFishingChannel This was in the late 1960's maybe the early 70's; a guy was selling it off a small food cart on the pier in Huntington - it was some of the best fish I have ever had. I have not eaten a lot of smoked fish, but that Halibut shore lunch as a child sticks out in my mind still to this day. If you want a great idea for a restaurant, put some smoked fish on the menu - I am thinking smoked Halibut fish Tacos would crush the Taco scene in SoCal! I now live in NC, and I think Grouper would be a great fish out here to smoke. When I was on Tinian Island (Marine Corps) I ate some type of a Red Snapper cooked in a similar fashion - we dug a pit in the sand and build up some coals in it; put Banana leaves on top of the coals, then the fish, more leaves and buried it for a few hours. Dirt simple, and it was as close to smoking fish as I could come up with given the situation, but it made for a really great shore lunch (actually dinner). Don't think for a minute I am going to a tropical Island in the middle of the Pacific for 30 days and not take a fishing pole - that wasn't happening. But dig this Rodney, they have a species of terrestrial Hermit crabs running all over the Island which is butt simple to catch and is like Crack to fish. These Hermit crabs have a mussel on their ass the size of your thumb they use to hold themselves inside a shell - and the shells they use are those large Doctor Dolittle snail shells, which is a whole lot easier to crack open and get them out than anything found in the ocean. It is the best bait I have run across in my life. Takes all of about 5 minutes to catch all the bait you'll need for the day, and because it is mussel meat - it stays on a hook; it is the most righteous bait on the planet Bra!
