@@Wb.knitting it’s crochet not knit and you can do a slip stitch just fine and just crochet that beginning tail into the piece to keep it from unraveling if that’s what you’re worried about

The difference I believe is not in how it looks, but in how much easier it is to do. I struggle just holding onto the yarn without it anchored to something so def going to try this.

For anyone struggling to see what is being performed in the video. WARNING: VERY DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS BELOW ⬇️ How to hold your yarn: Lay your left hand face up. With your right hand, take the tail end of your yarn, run it over your palm and place it in between your left index finger and left thumb. Wrap the tail end around your index finger twice, such that the tail end of the yarn comes out below the finger as shown in the video. Your pinky and ring finger will hold the part of the string attached to the skein (ball of yarn) while your thumb and middle finger will hold the tail end. How to create a slip knot: Holding the hook in your right hand, insert the hook into the space created by the yarn, index finger, and middle finger. Move your entire left hand to the left (or your hook to the right) so that the right strand catches the side of the hook and makes a bulge. Rotate the hook in a full 360° circle where the top of the hook comes toward you and the bottom of the hook goes away from you, making sure the hook’s head goes beneath the part of the yarn held by the thumb and middle finger. Maintaining the twist in the yarn just created, move only your thumb and middle finger up the yarn to hold the twist in place. Wrap the working yarn (the strand running from your index finger to the loop on the hook) around the hook once, from back to front (known as a yarn-over) and pull a loop through the loop that is on your hook. You have created a slip knot and, if you prefer, maintain the yarn wrapped around your left hand and pull down on the tail with your thumb and middle finger to tighten the knot. You can also let go of the yarn in the left hand now but will need to hold your yarn the same way later. Remove the hook from the knot you created. Place the hook into a stitch of your project. Place the knot back on the hook. At this stage if you decided to let go of your yarn, refer to the prior instructions in the beginning of this message to hold your yarn again. Pull the slip knot loop through the stitch of your project and chain at least 1 to secure the yarn onto your project. And you’re done! If I made an error in any of the steps please feel free to correct me but keep the comments respectful and constructive, thank you! I hope these instructions help!

It's just an easier way to change color because the yarn is anchored onto something instead of just loose. I struggle with loose yarn changes so definitely going to try this.

@@Bubby448 The knot actually made it easier for me to control the tension of the new yarn when joining it. It literally makes no difference except it being easier to handle. And all crochet starts out with a knot. The only time it would be wrong to join with a knot is if it's a wearable like a sock and it's only wrong because it would be felt by the wearer, otherwise nothing is wrong with knots. Any fiber craft has this silly "rule". Yes, it's okay to not do knots if you don't want to, but it's not okay to try and demand it of other people. I'm sorry for being hostile, but I just see this no knots thing everywhere including embroidery and cross stitch and it's just ridiculous.

@@Bubby448 And if someone continues to make knots and are happy, and if someone starts out not doing knots but then goes to do them and stays doing knots, what then? You going to leave them alone and let them enjoy their hobby?
