Just an Fyi you do not need that gauge setup. If you take both of the oil cover and coolant cover off there is a plastic piece underneath that pops up if you apply pressure to the top and there is a bleeder valve under that. you just lift up the bar up so it sits between the grooves and it will allow air to flow out of the system.

Thank you for showing the work from beginning to end without fast forwarding it. For a DIY like me and wanting to work and maintaining my car myself, I learn a lot from your videos. Please keep them coming! Flushing the coolant is one of the project I have in mine.

+Ross Golden thanks! It’s a tough line sometimes of what and how much to edit out, but I hate when other how-to’s skip important stuff. I figure if it’s too much people can always fast forward and skip ahead, but you can’t see what’s not there!

Thanks for this and the whole series. Good stuff. Your approach helps me to visualize and problem-solve before I get near the car. Example: wrestling with stuck coolant hoses sucks so very much. Watching you reminded me of this so, this weekend, I prepared in advance a new hack that worked beautifully: a plastic trim removal tool. The smaller, candy bar-sized tool from a trim kit, with one flat end and one slightly angled blunt end, is sturdy and perfect for wedging between the hose and fitting. Shimmy it in under the connection, pry lightly and stretch the hoses a bit while sliding the tool around the fitting, and coolant will flow out. Even a stubborn hose will then pop off nicely with minimal exertion by freeing the seal this way-with no scoring or damage to the aluminum bits.

Thanks for the DIY. I ran this by a FB Boxster 986 group, and learned that there is a bleeder valve underneath the cover. Remove both the oil and radiator fill caps, pull up the black plastic cover. There's a wire handled valve that you pull up. Drive the car for 5 miles or so to bleed out the system. The close the valve.
@HelpMeDIY

+Bryan Dees that’s right, there is a bleeder valve for that purpose. However, if you is a pressure bleeder (correctly) you should have no air in the system that you have to bleed when you are done :)

Well that was quite a task but very satisfying. My Dad was an RAF MT mechanic and over his life spray painted , panel beat welded and did every kind of engine rebores plus any manner of jobs. Of course working on a lube bay ramp and probably never on a mid engines car it made it much easier so your efforts for a home job must get a 10/10 , always erring on the side of caution is wise as once something breaks it just causes more issues Well done

Another great video. Done this job last year and used Prestone Coolant mixed 50/50 with distilled water. Just so you know this coolant is compatible with all makes and colours of coolant even the Porsche pink and a lot cheaper. Also didn't have a vacuum filler so just done it the Old fashioned method and manually filled it with the bleeder valve open. Mick 👍🍻

Great video content. Enjoy watching you struggle. It happens to all of us. I was bit scared when you used the channel wrench to remove the hoses. I personally would use a flat screw driver or plastic interior pry tools and little silicone to get things moving. Porsche coolant is expensive. VW version is red and is little cheaper. Cheers

Great, so having that 3 way vaccum valve means you dont have to flussh out the whole system(fluid in pipes running to the rads in front )?, how much for that 3 way valve thingy ? since i have a compressor sounds like a good idea ) thanks for all the good tips on your channel.

I think I bought the identical coolant at the VW dealership for A LOT less than the Porsche dealer wanted. In case there is not a friend local to you who can supply. I bet the shipping cost might otherwise be a bit much.

You mentioned that the coolant had not been changed before. Video of coolant color looked Green draining out of the hoses instead of Pink Porsche factory coolant. Surly age played a part in degradation. Or, if you bought the car pre-owned someone already converted it. Perhaps a Non-Porsche shop flushed with standard Ethylene Glycol Green. ?

+fatboybutch Original owner is a friend of mine and I know he didn’t do it himself, and he gave me all the service records. Nothing in there about it being done. I think I read that Porsche changed the coolant color at some point. 🤷♂️

Hey, really enjoying your channel. Already working on a couple of things on my 987s. Got a question for you though.. When you disconnected the hoses, did that mostly drain the radiators as well? I'm not familiar with where the hose inlet and outlet are located on each radiator. Thinking of trying to flush mine with a hose when I do it. Thanks again

Great video and greatly appreciated. I am prepping to do mine this weekend. Question: when you were in the vehicle and turned the heater on to open the valve to the heater core did you then turn the ignition back to off? Or does the ignition need to be in the ignition on state/engine not running state the entire time to keep the heater core valve open? Thanks again!

Very helpful video. Porsches are weird. Those Germans did make an awesome car though. Couple of questions. 1. Do you have to use the “Porsche Coolant? 2. Do you have to use that vacuum tool to add the coolant? Can I just use a funnel and pour in.
@HelpMeDIY
3 жыл бұрын
+Derrick Lane thank! 1. You don’t HAVE to, it’s just recommended. You just can’t mix incompatible types. 2. You can just pour it in, but you have to bleed the system on your own manually if you do.

+Enzo Del Bono if you don’t have a pressure bleeder, yes. With the pressure bleeder you don’t have to worry about air getting stuck or having to use that. And you won’t have to worry about your system running for any period of time with air instead of water in it.

Has Porsche ever looked at the simpler setup on other cars where there would be a petcock at the bottom of a radiator, hopefully the lowest point in the system for draining? A design where you have to disconnect multiple hoses is criminal. Also your vacuum filling contraption is too expensive for something that needs to be done once every 5 years.
@HelpMeDIY

+Alexander Schonfeld I use that a couple times a year as I have multiple cars and I would never let it go more than 2-3 years between fluid changes.
