I've owned my 2001 savage since 2007 and always had a shop change oil just because i didn't know how. Now that shop closed doors and I'm forced to do it myself. Because of your video I was able to do it and it is a cake walk thanks to you! Much appreciate the tip. Ill be doing it myself from now on!!

put a foam pad on the ground underneath your hand when you're breaking loose the drain plug so you don't bang your wrist or knuckles too badly. use aluminum foil to guide the oil away from the pipes and leaking everywhere.

Good tips, thanks. I have a 2015. I bought it on a whim with just 500 miles. Thought I would sell it after 1 season but it has won my heart. There is something about it's simplicity that I like. Even did the 1st service with valve adjustment myself. It has a Dyna pipe and A/F adjustment. Maybe you can vlog more info about servicing it. I do wish It had a trip mileage or fuel gauge. I put a mechanical only petcock on it because California fuel will destroy the vacuum diaphragm. If you don't get the S40's charm then you dislike it, there is no in-between with it.

Thanks. However, most of don't have a m/cycle lift so have to do things on the ground, and without a centre stand, it is a pain in the whatever. Thankfully, my wife holds my S40 upright when checking oil, filling with oil etc.

Did you refill on side stand or did you leave it "level" after the drain plug?
@YouMotorcycle
2 жыл бұрын
Bike never on the side stand for any of this. Upright all the time. The sidestand is out in some of the shots, but the front wheel is locked in a vice and the bike is upright.
@YouMotorcycle

If you do it with the bike on the sidestand you won't get all the old oil out and you won't refill it properly either which could damage your motor.

Do you stand it upright to check the oil level, or at rest? Also, I opened the stock filter and there was no o-ring, and none with the replacement filter. Do I absolutely need it?
@YouMotorcycle
2 жыл бұрын
Everything is done with the motorcycle upright. Kickstand is out but if you look carefully you'll see shadow and reflection under it because the bike is never on the stand. If your oil filter isn't seated properly, what's the point in even having oil filter in there at all? I would get the new o-ring. Filter not seated properly isn't going to be doing it's job the way it's supposed to.

SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL INDEPENDENT MOTORCYCLE SHOPS. Most of the online shops are all owned by the same big conglomerate Comoto, which owns JP Cycle, Revzilla, etc.... Not good for the industry, but that's a whole other video.

You can use whatever you like. Mineral oil is fine. That motor hasn't changed much in 40 years when they didn't have full synthetics for cruisers like we do today.
