I’m a violinist playing for around 5 years and don’t have an extra set of strings at home so I would really like the strings. I’m just so happy that during quarantine I’ve finally finish learning and performing Mozart’s fourth violin concerto in D Major. It’s been my dream piece to play ever since 3 years after starting violin from twoset.

I leaned, that you should insert just the end of the string into the hole in the pegs so that it just goes all the way through but doesn't stick out. Then you do two turns to the middle of the peg box and then you cross over these two turns to keep the string tight. The rest of the turns should be as tight to the wall of the peg box as possible so that the string grips the peg and keeps it tight. I also adjust the length of the strings a little bit to make sure that the pegs are in a position that is comfortable for tuning. More or less upright except for the e peg because that one should ideally be angled backwards a bit to give your left hand as much room as possible.

I've been changing strings every few months for more years than I care to think about but still found this tutorial really helpful. Here's a couple of further comments that I hope will be useful. (1) New strings take a few days to stretch out, which makes it difficult to tune four new strings all at once. Change strings in pairs. Start with the E and D, give them a couple of days to stabilize, then do the A and G. This gives you a stabilized, adjacent string to help you tune each new string. (2) Especially in warm, humid weather, the pegs can get very stiff and hard to adjust. One way to help this is to wind the strings so that the wound strings don't crowd up against the wall of the peg box and create extra friction. After you've passed the string through the hole in the peg, pull the peg out a little ways and take a couple of turns to the inside of the peg box. Then cross the string over the hole and take up the remaining turns toward the outside of the peg box. See if this doesn't leave a little space between the wound string and the peg box wall. (3) Strings age slowly but pretty steadily, so it's easy to forget how new strings sound. I play an hour or two nearly every day; I've settled on a scheduled change around every six months, When the time comes round, I'm still always surprised at how the new strings brighten up the sound of the instrument. (4) Modern strings are pretty hardy, but I still like to keep a set of used strings in the case for when I or someone in the group breaks a string: it happens. Thanks, Sumina: your videos are a help and an inspiration!

What made be happy today is the beauty of the little things. After 3 months of quarantine in Milan, now I am in the countryside with my family and today it was a simple day that I spent with my little cousins (which I hadn’t seen since Christmas) and I studied a bit and played the violin. This was a simple day which reminded how important it is to appreciate the little things we have in life.

I don't play violin, but this was interesting for me nevertheless. I didn't know that certain violin parts are changeable without altering the 'historic substance' of the instrument! As a layman (but I played with chamber ensembles) I have questions ref. the stretching of new strings. Do brand new violin strings need a time to stretch and "settle in" like in pianos and harpsichords? Some string players I knew always kept a used (but still good!) set of strings in their violin case for emergencies because of that reason: They didn't want to have to deal with a new string stretching & going out of tune if their old one snapped just before an important event. Thanks for your instructive videos by the way! The best thing for me in this COVID19 lockdown is that I had enough time to learn some challenging (piano) literature! :)

I'm happy today, because I'm glad my mum made me pick up the violin when I was 14 years old. Initially I hated the violin and questioned why I should learn a 2nd instrument when I already play the piano! Fast forward to today, I can easily bring my violin with me wherever I go and play it whenever I feel bored or just need some music to lift me up! Whereas a piano, I can't possible bring it with me in a suitcase. I moved to a different location due to COVID-19 where there is no piano. So I'm happy at least I still have my violin with me :)

@@victoriale6619 first of all you are a twoset fan😂 Second of all do you play piano because it helps at learning theory and violin I am a beginner at violin I picked it up 4 and a half months ago and I learned kinda good tunes (in my opinion but I get shaky bow a lot) like air by gottfried finger and Coleg y prifysgol Abertawe These are trinity grade 2 pieces (yes i skipped grade 1 and initial grade) Hope you have fun Also squeaking is probably from pressing to hard with the bow Try to like apply a bit of pressure as a beginner because I believe you do not take dynamics as a beginner Play a bit further from the bridge (for now that is what my teacher told me) and not on the fingerboard Play between them. Have fun

My E-string has been whistling a lot lately and it was getting worst and made me do all sort of weird stuff while string crossing. I am an adult learner starting in 2019, but because of this COVID-19, I couldn't have face-to-face violin lesson for several weeks already. And this E-string was getting worse -- it whistled even when I play a G on E-string and then just open E-string, I didn't even string crossed! It was super annoying so I asked a friend who plays the violin and she suggested me to change the string, and saying there are tons of youtube video teaching you to do that. But I didn't know why I just procrastinated to figure this out, despite I do have a spare E-string. Funny thing is your video pops up right after my practice today, feeling completely annoyed by the freaking whistling. I immediately follow your instruction and change the string. And the whistling is gone! I practised for an extra hour feeling really great! This is what made me happy today :) Although it kept going out of tune, it is still much more enjoyable than the whistling!! Thanks a lot. And Congrats on 100K subscribers.
