The Mazda-built M5OD transmission began appearing in Ford vehicles beginning in 1988. They were used over the years in some Econoline vans, Broncos, Aerostars, Explorers, Rangers, Cougars/Thunderbirds, and of course, the F150 Pick-ups. The M5OD transmissions were discontinued in 2011.
The M5OD-R2, a medium-duty version, was used in 1988-2008 F150s, and is a 5-Speed fully synchronized transmission, available in 2WD and 4WD versions, and paired with 6-cylinder and 8-cylinder engines. My truck is the 2003 model with the 4.2L V6 engine.
The transmission fluid is surprisingly NOT gear oil, but ATF (automatic transmission fluid), even though it is a manual transmission. Capacity is 3.75 quarts. I use the Mobile1 Synthetic ATF.
I will show you the whole process as best I can. It's not hard, but you will need some kind of transfer pump to add the new fluid, because otherwise the fill hole is pretty tough to access.
