Nice, thanks. I have a 77 302 f150 as well, this helps. What is that black hose coming out of the top of your oil cap for? Mine doesn't have that. Mine also doesn't have that sleeve thing coming off the spout of the air intake, do I need that? Thank you!

You’re very welcome, glad to help, and nice truck by the way. The black hose on the oil cap is my PCV valve, that’s the factory location, you do need the PCV valve but it doesn’t have to be there, a lot of the times people will install them in the passenger side valve cover at the back especially on aftermarket valve covers. I think the sleeve thing you’re referring to is the black accordion looking thing going to the air cleaner, if that is what you’re referring to then that’s my cold air intake tube going to the air cleaner which is also factory, which you don’t have to have but I just like it. If that’s not what you’re referring to then just clarify a bit more for me and I’ll try to help you. Hope this helps, glad you enter video. Thanks for watching.

@@FastFords289 Ah yes to both. I see there's a black hose coming out of the side valve cover on the passenger side at the back, so thanks! Should I look into that accordian thing? What's the advantage? I can't see where the hose is supposed to go, maybe I'm missing the part?

@@SunLitPandaFury ok cool, no problem, well the black accordion sleeve is actually to help force in fresh cooler air into the engine when going down the road, it pulls in fresh air from the grille vs being soaked in the hot engine air surrounding it, kinda how cold air intakes work on modern cars, same concept, gives you better fuel mileage and more horsepower in a sense because cooler air is always better for an engine. There is supposed to be a black plastic box bolted to the radiator support on the fender apron next to the battery and the black accordion sleeve snaps onto that then onto the air cleaner.

@@FastFords289 Thanks for explaining that, makes total sense and I'd like to get one of those since it's good for the engine. Do you know what the black box that's supposed to be bolted to the fender is called?

Do you have videos on checking/swapping out gear oil and power steering gear box fluid? I just picked up a '79 F150 Ranger XLT Supercab. It's my first classic car. Honestly, it will be the first time I've changed the oil and other fluids in my own vehicle. Feels like drinking from the fire hose a bit, lol!

Lol I hear ya, it can be alittle scary to tackle things when they’re new to you but these old fords are simple if you have some basic mechanical skills. I don’t have any videos on that really other than like in a manual transmission I have a video changing the fluid in my 68 fairlane fastback with a T5 I installed. Even though it’s automatic transmission fluid in those manual’s it’s the same concept to changing gear oil. If you are referring to changing rear differential fluid then I have a video where I changed the rear gears in my 76 ford truck, that’s the only way to change gear oil in a Ford 8 or 9 inch rearend. You have to pull the gears out then scoop all the pills oil out then put it back together and refill. If you have an 8.8 rear in that truck like some did, then you just pull the rear cover off, drain it and reinstall cover and refill. I have a video doing that on a 92 Ford Ranger with the 7.5 rear, same concept though. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for the video. Where exactly is the drain plug located? I just got a 79 and I can't find it!!
@FastFords289
Жыл бұрын
No problem, it’s in the back of the oil pan, if it has the original oil pan it’s supposed to be in the back bottom edge, but someone could have put a car oil pan in it and that would be on the driver side bottom edge towards the front where the drain plug is located. Nice purchase, thanks for watching.

Hey there! Do you have a video on changing out an EGR valve out of curiosity?
@FastFords289
7 ай бұрын
Sorry, no I can’t say that I do because usually when those go bad I either block them off or just eliminate them. The one on my 76 F100 has been blocked off since I bought it. I keep in in place just for esthetic originality but it doesn’t work. Sorry I couldn’t be more help, but thanks for watching.

@@FastFords289 thanks for responding! I've got the 6.6 liter 400 that is riding ROUGH all the sudden when it's warm. I have a sense it's the EGR valve, which has probably never been changed. Looks pretty straight forward, but through I'd check in with an expert!

@@lelandmorris5300 no problem, glad to help when I can. Yeah if it’s never been replaced then I can pretty much guarantee it’s bad. You could also have a vacuum leak somewhere else as well, you can take carburetor or brake cleaner and spray around the engine while it’s running to see where you may have a vacuum leak, as the engine rpm will change. Just be sure not to spray it directly on your distributor or coil. Another way I’ve heard of looking for a vacuum leak is to hook a smoker in line so the engine sucks in the smoke and you’ll see smoke come from the places it’s leaking. Easy now, I think you’re giving me too much credit, idk if I’m an expert or not lol. Thanks for the compliment though, I appreciate it. Hope I’ve been able to help you. Thanks for watching.

Just was gifted a 77 with a 351 Truck is in great shape and runs perfectly. Doin my best to research as much as I can tips and tricks for maintaining these old trucks. Thanks for the vid!
@FastFords289

Very cool, the 76 and 77 year models are my favorite. The 351m is a great engine as well, although a lot of people will tell you the 351m and 400 is a bad engine and just a boat anchor bays simply not true, I love those engines. They pull like crazy but don’t have a lot of top end power which is why people don’t like them. Really these trucks are very simple to maintain, as long as you keep the kingpins greased or if you have a 4x4 then it would be ball joints, but keep them greased and all your other steering linkages tight and well lubricated they don’t really need much else. I drive mine pretty much daily. Good luck and nice truck. Thanks for watching.

Also one thing that you may find you’ll need eventually is the back of the instrument cluster panel where the paper circuit board is will usually dry rot and start to fall apart, then your bulbs won’t stay in and your gauges may stop working properly so you’ll need to order a new one to replace it. I had to do that on my 76. The material and compound they used for the plastic back then wasn’t that good and will dry rot.
