must be this guy's first VW oil change. Rather than a strap wrench, Bluepoint FW7614A works great to pull the oil filter housing AFTER you have depressed the drain valve and removed most of the oil. Works great for torquing it properly also. 25Nm if you want to be technical; good and snug works fine too.

All ya gotta do is push up on the orang tab on the filter to drain the filter housing. It's what I do in my 2.5 I-5 Jetta, makes it alot cleaner.

To correct a previous post ... on a B7 (2012 - Present) Passat the correct Torx sizes to remove the plastic under engine splash guard are T20 and T40.

Gonna be my first oil change for my wife's passat , this video and all the comments helped alot. The video was good for understanding the belly pan removal and where stuff is etc. Thanks for all the comments on the oil filter draining tips that is a blessing for my garage floor, also knowing I'll need Torx saved me time. Great stuff.

Ok, I can see now why he didn't pull that plug, it's a tiny plastic piece, I wouldn't dare touch it unless I have a spare around. That thing would probably crack. If you're not in the hurry the oil canister doesn't make that much mess, since I'm not a shop I just took my time and it was fine. The small Torx was a T-12 I couldn't fit a strap wrench around the cannister so I just used a slide jaw pliers and it was fine. The 2012 passat is great compared to the older ones.. the belly pan on this is easy compared to older models. Nice changes. I'm not too crazy about that cannister oil filter but I suppose I can see what I'm getting for a filter that way.

You can push in the nipple at the end of the oil filter casing to drain the oil. There's also a special tube you can get that goes on but just pushing on the nipple works pretty well. Kind of a pain though, I like the old / regular filters MUCH better!!!

Google "VW Oil Filter Drain Tool" and you'll find it. I ended up not even using it. Maybe next time I'll try it again.

There is a special hose you can buy that screws into the bottom of the oil filter housing. It allows you to drain the oil from it before you unscrew it and get oil all over the place.

Does the cap you removed at 6:13 have an O ring on it?
@sqwuade

If you replace the big O ring that comes with the filter kit you shouldn't have to torque it down so much to keep it from leaking when putting the housing back in. 25Nm tq is spec.

He mentions using a T-40 Torx bit, but refers to the other Torx bit only as being 'smaller'. 'F' for detail. Also, two different sized filter wrenches are mentioned in this tread, 74mm & 76mm. Does anyone know the true size of the needed wrench?
@jamesferguson5398

The smaller Torx needed is a T20 and the filter wrench needed is an ABN 8126 (74.2mm) or an Assenmacher 2175 (74.5mm). They can both be purchased on Amazon. I picked the ABN because it was only $12 with free shipping and is made of aluminum with good quality.

Be nice to see gloves being used. Sump plug threads wiped clean....and inspected. Filter housing and filter seal shoulder wiped clean..before using new seal....which should be oiled. Just a few points that a GOOD mechanic should be aware of.

WOW... No wonder it leaks after...how about wiping everything down cleaning the housing,gaskets and drain plug. VW also says always replace drain plug as threads do get heated and warp once removed.... most dealerships will give it to you if you buy oil / filter from them. A Little TLC goes a long way. As all you VW guys know.

I absolutely recommend getting this Mercedes 14 Points 74mm special oil filter wrench. Get that filter case TIGHT! And you wont have the leaking problems! forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?5506008-2011-VW-Golf-VI-Oil-Change-DIY-(2.5-I5)-(27-Pictures
