Best power steering pump replacement video on a Astro Safari van on youtube.

Oh man I'm knee deep into this and it's a mess. Years of low level PSF leakage has made it a grimy mess. I was getting frustrated and came inside to take a break. Watched your video and man is it simple and spot on. Easy to follow!

my advice on Chevy Astro /GMC Safari power steering pump replacement. DONT. if possible scrap the van first. But this is the best video on it i have seen. The NAPA carlisle puller set is better in my opinion but the set shown is still a good choice avoid all the cheap sets at all costs. Mine did not have the u shaped tube rateher the high pressure hose went directly into the back---which is physically impossible to get started back into the pump with it mounted. But its impossible to get the pump mounted with the hose attached. So you have to get the pump part way in and start the hose connection and once you finally get it in position and bolted tighten the line. GMs official repair guide starts with "step 1--remove engine from vehicle" Anyway nice video glad yours was easier than mine.

Thankyou for making this video, I lost power steering and power assist brakes when started on a zero degree overnight. Followed your instructions and all went as well as these things go, the 36 millimeter spanner wrench is almost a must to take the fan nut off using the flat rod to hold the water pump pully from turning, got the spanner wrench at AutoZone, it was labeled for Ford, but it is the right tool for the job, the fan nut and the 14mm nut on the rear of the pump bracket was the hardest part. Good video, thankfully I didn't have the evil valve, Lol

I really like this video, just a heads up that for a first generation (1985-94) some things are not needed or the same. The tensioner is not the same. You want the AC Delco 38108. The way you loosen the tension is different and so fan pulley removal is not the same. I didn't need the large spanner or the suggested fan bolt tool because there was no large bolt to remove. I also purchased, but could not use the bypass valve. I tried installing it, but it reversed the configuration of the high pressure hose and was impossible to use. I also didn't need the high pressure return line. My 87 uses a simple 1' 3/8 hose for that. The upside is with just a couple of these things returned the cost of the project goes way down. Something else to keep in mind is that I’m not the original owner of my van so somebody may have changed things without me knowing so your specific application may vary. One more thing, he mentions it twice, but doesn't show it. Use grease on your pulley puller set or you will strip it.

Add Power Steering UV Dye, it should narrow down the leak when you shine a UV flashlight on the components.

I've done everything as the video states. Still no stearing. Question the cap on the reservoir leaks pressure when pumping the brake pedal Is that normal? I replaced it with a new cap and it is the same? I also replaced the steering gearbox AND hydro boost with 0 success? PLEASE HELP

Did the steering work before you undertook this project?
@OldSchoolNoe
Жыл бұрын
If the steering was working before, maybe you forgot to connect something. I would raise the front end and have someone steer with key on engine off, here I would check to see if the steering shaft is rotating as the steering wheel is rotated. Next I would check to see if the pitman arm is moving as the steering wheel is rotated. Last I would check if the outer tie rod moves as the steering wheel is rotated. All this is to check your basic steering system.

You can buy the line that fits right into the back of the pump without having to buy that bypass tube

I just know the long bolt that goes through the motor mount. A 16mm socket fits on the bolthead and a 17mm fits on the nut
