I think the first time I changed strings was 1973. And yet I watched this entire video. After I have the new strings on and stretched pretty good, I pull each string up out of it's nut slot, and use a pencil on the slots. Especially the wound strings. I find it helps. There are only three Guitar Players on KZitem that I watch every video. You, Uncle Larry, and Tim Pierce. If you start doing those "Why this is (add a mediocre Band name here) best song" Or your comments on the 'Top Ten' list, I'm gone. But if you continue making the great videos I've come to enjoy, I will be here watching and stealing little tricks. Thanks for that. Much respect...

Industry should be short term for long term benefits. Make a widget last 100 years. Adapt the machinery. Then make something else that lasts 100 years. Free up time, resources, labor, and shut it down when everyone has the 100 yr. widgets. Stop wasting resources, and designing in short life-spans, and cheap junk for profit. Stop goofing on the earth and blaming the consumers whom you've given only your profiteering options to choose from. It comes from a Malthusian mind-set of scarcity, and not enough to go around, baked into Adam Smith economics (our system). Thus the drive to go big for economy of scale and uniformity, interchangeability. Which then brought us lobbying for competition killing regulations, and then "too big to fail" back-pocket graft and grift. Keeping up with the Jones, and entertainment/leisure time are the same as the Romans "bread and circus". Hail Caesar! We'll give them super-highways and Monday night football.🤣 That'll do it.

Hi Guthrie, I've heard people say that you should put a little more length on the G string to add a little more downward tension past the nut to compensate for the lack of a string tree on that string. What's your take on that? Also, would it be better to press the strings down at the bridge after tuning to pitch so that there's no crimp in the string moving forward as you tighten the string? Not sure if that would happen, or not. Just something that popped into my mind. I really appreciate the time you spend to help us improve. Aloha from Hawaii.

I own a signed poster sized drawing made by your cousin Sarah that she made for a school project when she was a little kid. It's a drawing of a little baldheaded kid and was tacked to the wall in Jim's basement in the Trapp Fest days. With Jim acting as her art dealer, I negotiated a price of $35 for it. It's a surrealistic masterpiece. People stare at it and ask me if it's a Picasso or something. I think I'll will it to you. It would look great on your wall. Danny P.

Thanks. Enjoyed that. Youre right about the meditation thing. Anything to do with a musical instrument, even changing strings is meditational and good for the mind. I just did so yesterday. The thing about it is, when changing strings or just playing.. nothing else can enter your mind except what youre concentrating on. Old worries and yesterday go out the window for as long as your dealing with the music issue. Personally, I always feel the benefit afterwards. No negativity for an hour or 2 is a healthy thing. No time or space to worry about worry. Thanks for reminding me.

Although I was aware of most of the tipps, there's still and always something new to learn, which I love (this time about the little push down near the bridge end and that natural oil thing, which sounds totally plausible to me! I'm going to try that from now on). The pegs on T-style guitars differ from those on ST-style or LP-type ones, so it'd be interesting to see, whether you had a cent or two on locking them in for the winds on those other guitars as much as possible. (I go through the perpendicular hole, make a right angle bend near where you clipped them, so we'd have to add half an inch to the amount of excess string, lock the upward sticking end with the first wind, the rest like you showed us here, meaning going _under the first_ wind with the rest of the winds, so the string makes an angle from the saddle. Any excess string past the tuning peg I cut as close to the peg as possible so not as poke my fingers when tuning) Loved to hear your stories from the neighborhood and community and hope, your uncle is doing better. Love that woodwork of his, really cool! Thanks a bunch!

Thanks for the tips! Not sure why one string at a time though. On my Tele, I like to take 'em all off & gives me a chance to wipe and grit of the fret board before putting new strings on. Don't worry about neck tension in the 5 minutes it takes to change 'em. It's a Telecaster. You can drive nails with it and it'll still stay in tune:)

One of the best tips I was given when changing strings, especially on a guitar with a Bigsby, trying to hold the tension, is use a capo at the first fret to hold the tension. Then winding the tuners is easy. And using an eraser to hold the ball ends on the Bigsby pins to keep them popping off. Thanks for your videos, GT, I feel like you and Tom are the greatest hangs.

I heard an interesting tip over on Scott's Bass Lessons regarding vintage-style tuners like yours which require you to snip the string before inserting it in the tuner; I don't know if this only applies to bass strings, or guitar strings as well, but he mentioned that when you snip the end of a loose (unstrung) bass string, it can actually ruin the string. Apparently the outer wire going around the core kinda holds everything in place, and when you snip it, the whole core wire can come loose from the outer winds, and then the string sounds fucked up and dead. His solution: put a crimp/kink in the string where you wanna cut it, then snip behind that crimp. That basically locks the two parts of the string together so they can't slip, sorta fusing the string, then you just snip the excess and push that fused tip into the vintage-style tuner. Again, no idea if guitar strings have this problem, and obviously it's only a concern for the wound strings, but it's something to keep in mind.

Today I learned Guthrie is a little bit crazy. I like him even more now cuz a little bit crazy is a whole lot human. I kinda thought the oil from your skin would destroy the strings faster but it makes sense that it would keep the strings from binding at the nut.
