Nice job, Hilton! I’d already re-lamped my interior lighting, doing the job last weekend, including the footwells; but your tutorial on the puddle lights has also now given me confidence to tackle those. My ‘Jugular’ (😄) is a 2014 XJ Portfolio, and the lighting is more or less identical to your model of XF. Its footwell lighting employs T10s - aka W5W, or ‘501’ in the UK - in the front, but the (shorter) festoon type in the rear, which a PO had converted to blue LED inserts 😏; not my choice, so they’re now cool-white colour temperature. The front footwell lights are black plastic cups, into which I’ve stuck a square of white self-adhesive label, which improves the lights’ output immensely. I also have a 2004 S-Type 3.0 SE, which was dissolving below the waistline before I lavished a barrow full of dosh on it - another story...

Bit late to the ‘Big Cat’ party....driven everything from mk1 Fiestas and Sierra Cosworths to Mercs and Beemers....always loved the look of old Jags, but growing up in the 70s and 80s remember they had a big drinking problem and weren’t reliable....FFWd a few decades and here’s me about to join the club. UK, especially cities, are clamping down on high powered/big engined cars - more tax etc...so me getting this v6 may well be the last one I get before I go hybrid or full electric...thing is due to more people owning and driving, congestion will still be there...so next stage is toll charging where we have to pay to drive on certain (main arterial) roads during peak times 🤷♂️ Shame about the seller...some right 🛎-ends around...but like you say his loss as now youve got an XFR...(which funnily enough was another one I was looking at hahahha) Thanks buddy, much appreciate your responses 🙏👍😎

Just a little heads up with regards to possibly why you were missing bulbs. My old XF with the same dome unit developed apparently a common fault where while driving along either the passenger or driver dome light would randomly turn on and off for various lengths of time and there was no way to turn them off. It was fixed under a recall here in the UK where they replaced the whole dome unit. So maybe that car has the same issue , and the previous owner just took the two bulbs out. Thought I might mention it just in case it suddenly starts doing it now you have bulbs in again.

Hey Paul. Sorry to hear about your clip. You can buy those little puddle light fittings on eBay. @@carfanfan At 80 AUD ( eBay) for a replacement lens I decided to try and fix what I had or just glue the lens back in which seems to a popular solution. In my case I was lucky as the tab had just fractured and not broken off completely. Some careful application with the glue gun and it seems to holding solid. I managed to find some canbus leds at a local motor factory ( not well stocked in Oz it seems ). The other side went a lot smoother this time, it does seem to be a downward action with a fine a screwdriver that pops the clip. All good now and waiting for darkness for the full effect. @carfanfan
4 жыл бұрын
Hey Brendon, you are looking at buying quite a beast. There are two major things to look out for which are basically due to bad maintenance on the previous owner's part - coolant leaks, water pump failing (will squeal while engine is idling) and also super charger bearing failure. Listen to the engine while it's idling just after startup - while the engine is still cold - if there is a gargling sound (sounds like marbles rumbling around inside the front of the engine) then the s/c bearings have failed. If you hear squealing, the water pump has failed. The water pump, spark plugs and supercharger belt must be replaced after 8 years or 100,000 miles so check if this has been done if the car is this age or miles. Check all the coolant hoses - while the engine is running, you will smell the coolant - I know that smell very well from my old XF from a few years ago. It has a unique smell and you will notice if the coolant tank is low on coolant, that's a telltale sign that it's leaking somewhere. Check under the car for any drips (other than a/c condensation). It's actually difficult to tell since it has a huge underbody tray. But after driving, if any oil is accumulating in the tray, it will be dripping from the vent holes in the tray after driving it. Also check the suspension components (multi link front and rear) for any tears in the rubber joints or signs of leaks from the rubber bushings (they are filled with oil and some with grease). While driving, listen for wheel bearing noise from the front - you will also feel the steering will wonder and you might have to keep correcting it. If the steering is sharp and precise, then you don't have any issues there. Other than that, you shouldn't have any other issues with it. They are pretty robust cars.

@@carfanfan okay, good to hear. sadly my xf has that problem. even with the orginal bulbs. maybe it has been same problem on yours with the pervious owner, and thats why he has removed the two side bulbs ? but nice to hear it works like it should.
