I changed my plugs without taking the tank off on my 2012 Triumph America . I used a wobble joint extension on a deep 18MM socket to break the plugs loose. Next remove the socket and extension. Then I used a short piece of windshield washer hose over the end of the plug to thread it out. I reversed the procedure to install the plugs. The job took less than 10 min. I blew the cylinders with an air hose before removing the plugs like the guy in the video did.

Can I ask what the rod going into the top of the Head nut is next to the Spark plug? Almost looks like a direct injection set up. I don't have that.

It's better to slacken the plugs about one turn before blasting away the debris, as this will dislodge any particles which were stuck where the plug meets the seat. BTW, it takes about 2 minutes to change both plugs on my Bonneville, without removing anything else - it's a 1978 T140.

Does the gas tank need to be drained first? If not, will it leak after disconnecting?

Good question - no, the fuel line has an auto-close mechanism to prevent fuel leaking out. That being said, you will likely have a splash of fuel come out in the process - so good to have a rag nearby.

I have found jobs that require you to remove the tank much easier when it’s near-empty. A heavy tank is harder to safely handle.

The Haynes repair book states removing the tank only gives you easier access to change the plugs.

1. You don't have to remove the tank to change the plugs. 2. You have to correctly gap every new plug as plugs are universal parts for a myriad of vehicles and all do not necessarily spec the same gap. 3. You'd be better off ditching the air injection rather than wasting money on fancy iridium plugs, the bonneville runs terribly lean with the air injection.

You didn't have to check the gap?

@@mineisthelefthandseat4768 Still best to check - some applications for the same plug may specify a different gap.
