This method for checking balance is just genius. I love this!!! I have been researching balance all day long and never saw something like this. Good work dude and you may have just saved me thousands of dollars through my career.

I've been using this since an old man taught me over 40 years ago (I say old tongue in cheek) about 8 years older than I am now. Of course not near as good as a computer spin balance but definitely will save tires and eliminate tire vibration on every kind of vehicle you can do it on.

buddy this was one of the neatest videos i've ever seen. A lot of great ideas for checking out a tire. I'm gonna use some of them on a car tomorrow that has a wobble in the front end.

Thanks for the comment. On a car you know, you can't balance on a drive axle, there's too much resistance, if you have a 4x4 you can't balance this way at all, if it's not 4wd, use the non drive axle, take of the wheel, free up the brake, put the wheel on tight and balance. This of course is not near as good as spin balance, but I've been doing this since I learned it from an old tire man 40 years ago and I never had any trouble, but fixed a lot of problems this way. any questions, just message.

Everybody laughed when I took an upside down five gallon pail, leveled it, set an over inflated basketball on it then, with help, set my out-of-round out-of-balance recap drive tires on it! Worked like an old bubble balancer. Wish I could find one for big truck tires!

Thank you for the comment and for subscribing, I'm not a pro mechanic anymore, I was a pro car mechanic in the '80s but quit full time mechanic and did metal work for a few years before driving a truck. Now I drive part time and do small scale excavating and landscape work. I still like to do all kinds of repair work, home, car/truck, small engine, whatever.

Those are steer tires. I would take both those off and put them on the rear and replace them with new ones. I almost totaled my dads 359 have a front tire blow out at 50 mph. You can't hold the truck on the road when the front end drops after a blow out. The only thing that saved my butt was I stayed off the brakes as long as possible and still put it in the ditch.

Twin Sticks I was running 68 mph on I-40 when my right steer tire exploded. I had done my pre-trip about an hour earlier and the tires were fine. It was a Michelin too. The wasn’t enough left of the carcass to even determine if it was a defect. Fortunately there was a large paved shoulder to veer off onto. Michelin makes a mediocre at best commercial tire.

A clever way to check if it's off. When I have to change a steer tire at home, or on the road side, I throw a couple of golf balls inside it and it keeps a good balance. It makes a little bit of noise, but I don't care, there are far more noisier parts than that on the truck. It's not a Cadillac by any means. Thanks Gordon.

Rotation is important as well as not using excessive brakes. I use balancers that go on the inside made with bearings but you could put a couple of golf balls for low pros inside and an extra for higher. Mercury and powder does work as good.

The driver side drive tire on my excursion is wobbling. It doesnt look life its got flat spots but just not on the rim right. I was told maybe swaping left with right but proper direction would be wrong unless i moved them to the front then the engine mount would shake creating even more ptoblems. What about shaving the tire or just remount.

Balance, alignment, grinding on the pavement when backing into a tight spot can leave a spot to start hammering on when driving down the road. the list goes on.

Put steel new rims and problem would be solved up Aluminum rims are prone to bend, Also If you put 3 golf balls inside that automatically balance the tire.
@madjackgamingandfitness498
6 жыл бұрын
I know this is an old comment, but I wanted to put this for future reference. Steel rims in my almost 3 years of experience have the biggest issue with balancing. You need almost twice the weight every time, and half the time the rim ends up being the issue. Steel is much more prone to bending than aluminum, it's much softer, where as aluminum is more brittle. There are pros and cons, but if you want a massive weight reduction and less balancing issues aluminum just wins hands down.

Why not dynamic balance the tire instead of static balance? Break down the tire, put in balance media, inflate, done. As the tire surface changes the balance changes immediately. Gets 30 % extra life because its always balanced. No possibility of throwing off a weight.

That's true, but about the drum, it's balanced from the factory but the rust on it can chip off on one side and leave the other side heavy, so on an old drum it can get out of balance, that's why you can do this method to get you by for a little while.
