It’s actually gas getting out, not air getting in, that causes them to float. Great video either way!
@Raiddd__
2 жыл бұрын
The gas getting out allows air in. The egg is depressurizing
@VunderCal
2 жыл бұрын
@@Raiddd__ yes it’s depressurization but air is not going in, the gas escaping has mass and so when it leaves the egg the egg gets lighter. Since the shell is rigid the volume stays the same and the density is reduced which eventually results in the egg floating. There isn’t any need for air to get in to allow it to float. You could store your eggs under water and they would still eventually start to float. Edit: it’s actually probably not depressurizing but maintaining a stable pressure as gases are produced within the egg and diffuse out. Overall pressure within the egg likely stays the same but that’s kind of semantics
@Raiddd__
2 жыл бұрын
@@VunderCal yeah this is really semantics at this point and I’m not trying to argue lol, but no, the mass gained/lost is negligible. The reason it floats is literally because there is MORE total gas in the egg the longer it sits. It’s not floating because it’s mass is less/ it’s lighter, it’s floating because the gas that gets in is more buoyant than water, and when enough gas gets it to make the eggs more buoyant than water, it floats.

They last quite a while longer if you refrigerate them. I don't recommend holding eggs that long, but they can be edible up to 3 months or so. The whites will be super watery but as long as there's no rot you're good.
