How long does a claim take?
The VA publishes the average claim wait times each month. As of May in 2023, the average VA decision wait time is between 3 to 4 months. Keep in mind that these are averages, so the wait time can be shorter or longer depending on your claim.
If you disagree with your rating decision, you have three options regarding how you would like the VA to review your case - and each of them takes a different amount of time to complete.
Remember that, depending on the type of appeal you choose, you may need to spend time gathering new evidence, which will add time to the process before the appeal even begins.
What will make your VA disability claim move faster?
The VA recognizes that some veterans are in situations that don’t allow them to wait years for a claim or an appeal. As a result, it allows veterans to expedite VA disability claims because of financial hardship, homelessness, terminal illness, or age.
Getting your evidence, argument, and documents correct the first time can help. Unfortunately, there is no real secret to getting your benefits quicker. However, working with a VA-accredited attorney can also help, as they are more familiar with the process and experienced in building a case for the VA.
