Good vid man. Gonna start pointing people here when they ask me about valves. Mine are due for a check soon but bikes been starting easy so doubt they're out any. Trying to do better about supporting my fellow 701 KZitem community

Cheers Steve. Mine has been starting fine and stuff, just a little noisey but nothing out of the ordinary for these motors. It was due a check as I hit 6200 miles, replaced the spark plugs and fuel screen too and it's happy now!!

I think you said measure the inlet valve clearance between the cam and the finger follower. Would it not be between the follower and the shim? Regards, IanB

It's been a while since I recorded the video so it's possible I said that but yes, it needs measured between the shim and follower! 👍 :)

Great video. I was thinking about doing this myself on my 2017 701....and then I watched this. What a nightmare. I'll just cough up the cash and pay to have it done.

If you've got the tools and time to do it then give it a go mate. Will save you a good few hundred at the dealers! It was a faff the first time but should be a lot easier when I do them again in a few weeks. 👍

Thanks great video. When I removed the plastic cover to reveal the crankshaft bolt oil poured out, is that normal?
@Twedymoto

if you had thebike on the side stand then that's probably right as that's where the oil level would be. If it was upright, it may have been over filled slightly but not much should have come out.

Thanks for making this video. I have a SMCR 2020. I think it’s the same engine. When removing the coils did you pull them out of the plastic holder or just disconnect the cables and undo the two screws and pull the whole lot out?
@RobMatthews21
3 жыл бұрын
And what did you use for the “special tool” to lock the crank at TDC, a screw driver?
@Twedymoto
3 жыл бұрын
No problem. yes, the 2020 SMCR is the same engine as my 2017 (some minor mechanical differences) but has more advanced electronics (cornering ABS, throttle maps etc). I removed the plugs from the top of the coils, took the screws out and took the whole lot out. I don't recall locking it in TDC, I was just careful not to move it but you could use a screwdriver or a long bolt (M6 i think, could be wrong though). Hope this helps :)

Nice explanation, but I'm looking for the how to get to the shim... Do you have some picture of the shop manual about how to get there ? Thank you
@Twedymoto
5 жыл бұрын
If you use facebook, there's full versions of the service manuals on the husqvarna 701 group in the files section. The intake side is easy, just move the cam over but the exhaust side needs a bit more work.

I didn't see other videos say taking a spark plug out was required to turn the engine crank to Top Dead Center?
@Twedymoto
Жыл бұрын
Taking a plug out makes it easier to get to tdc so that you're not fighting the compression of the engine. I was replacing mine anyway so that's why I had them out. 👍

my bike stalled one day and won’t start at all. but i also think it might need new shims on the valves because it’s over 1k past the check. do you think that would stop it from starting at all?
@Twedymoto
2 жыл бұрын
Tight valves can be a cause of it not starting when hot among other issues but to be 1,000mioes past the check it shouldn't be that bad. Hope you got it sorted. 👍

If you mean the rocker cover screws, then i'm not 100% sure. You can get at the left side one easily but the front and rear right might be a pain. take the plastics off and get a look in.

As far as I'm aware there haven't been any major changes to the head since the launch of the new engine ( with balance shaft in the head), but there have been a few revisions to the decompression mechanism so should be very very similar or exactly the same process. 👍

@@Twedymoto Friend, if the tolerances were higher, what would you have to do to the bike to make it work normally? What would you have to change? Thanks for your reply.

You would need to remove the old shims and fit the correct sized ones to bring the clearances back withing spec.

@@Twedymoto how do you remove all that stuff, considering there are no more simple rocker arms with a pivot pin?
@Twedymoto

I've not had to do it yet but the intake side is easy, you just slide the cam over and the shims lift out. For the exhaust side you need to remove the rocker arm which is just a couple of bolts.
