Two grinders? Are you nuts? You need at least four, cut off, straight wire wheel, flap disk and pipeliner at least. Also, remember the old saying about angle grinders. Never lay them down on the wheel. You can break/chip the disks and if somehow the grinder starts without you holding it you have a little warning before it starts scooting across the room at you. Fricking grinders are the original guided missiles, they will find you no matter where you are.

Got a pretty big splinter in my eye this summer while grinding and cutting the floorboards out of my XJ this summer. Almost lost a finger. Ordered a face shield, closed safety googles and thick leather gloves when I came home from the hospital. It's a pain letting the doctor poke the splinter out of your eye! WEAR SAFETY GEAR AT ALL TIMES! I have two Hitachi grinders, found one in the dump-yard and fixed it up. DeWalt is pretty pricey here in the land of ice and snow, with the midnight summer and the hot springs flow :)

My welding school bought us all a harbor freight grinder. Idk if most of them lasted a week. Mine amazingly lasted about 3 months. I ended up going straight for a Bosch after that. That is a quality grinder. The other grinder I have is the same Makita shown. The thing with that trigger though, it wears out quickly, so it won’t actually stay on. The initial start up, jars the trigger and turns it off. It even happens when I’m grinding. I pretty much always have to have my finger on the trigger.

that polisher showed at the end, theyre all like that even the new ones, huge and clunky, i believe they have quite the big motor inside.. im curious why it doesnt seem like polishing/buffing would need that much power, only thing i can think is people tend to polish/buff for alot more continuous hours all at once so it needs to be able to handle all that heat and work at once where with no breaks where as grinders are on and off and even when you go at a bevel or long weld with a grinding stone you usually are done or need a break after 30 minutes but some people might have a polisher/buffer going 2-3 hours non stop getting their garage princess shined up

I have the same 4.5 Dewalt that was the 3rd one over from the left. It's 11 amp which is one of the more powerful 4.5 inch grinders, especially for the price, around 100 bucks. I love it and it's lasted through some abuse for sure but the head on it does get pretty hot. Damn Jeremy was ripping on Matt pretty good over that old Ryobi for a bit. I was hoping Matt would talk a bit about that metal Diablo diamond cut off wheel he got a while back. Would have liked to hear a longer term update on it.

One other thing to note, OSHA job sites doesn't allow any grinders with a constant on switch, they must be an only on with pressure type of switch and are allowed to have a locking mechanism as long as the lock can be turned off in a quick single motion. Just for those of you that plan on using your tools on the job from time to time.

Here's why variable speed tools burn up: they decrease fan speed (less cooling) while increasing resistance (generates more heat). They do not reduce speed via transmission therefore you have less torque and more motor load. Destined for failure.

for sure you cant lower the speed on those and still lean into the cut, theyre good for somethings but i personal dont own one just because i dont see them up here in canada often, metabo and some other brands started putting temp sensors in the electronics so they shut the grinder down before roasting it.. that could get annoying though if they set that cut off temp too low

Big fan of 5" makita grinders myself. I have one newer one with a "soft start" that 98% drives me nuts. Takes maybe a second for the wheel to come up to speed but feels like forever. The other 2% it's the greatest thing ever. Grinder doesn't kick at all on startup and if you're working on a polished piece or in a real tight area it's great. $30 grinders are great if you have more than one sitting around. If one craps out and I can't finish the job the money I saved is gone.

metabo is probably in the lead for grinders but theyre certainly pricier then most they offer specialty grinders like the pancake style which would probably be pretty useful for fabricating under rigs and exhaust work, the first grinder ive ever owned is still my favourite its a 5" 12 amp rat tail style under the "maximum" name brand from canadian tire (not the cheapo mastercraft) theyve since done a model update on it and its priced at 160$ i believe but goes on sale for 100$ or less idk if the new model is better or if its been scaled down im curious about the walter brand grinders, never seen one in use but their cutting accesories seem to be the best they really have a different blend for everysituation if you can find a supplier that isnt marking them up too much there the best bet for zip cuts and everything wonder if they have the best grinder or not, they dont look too appealing to my personal preferences but id try one given the chance

few points/ideas as i use grinders alot since i dont have a plasma cutter or any good steel fabricating sanders/cutting but still do alot of fab, own 7 or 8 in every size shape, appendix all the grinder types have their place, variable speed, small ones, big ones, rat tail style, horse c**k style, trigger switch, paddle switch, lock switch, 5 amp right up to 15 amp, i prefer the rat tail style with a trigger switch and preferably a lock button on the trigger so you can lock it on jobs that it really needs to be locked on but have it under your finger for other jobs and safety, needs to be 12 amp or higher the cheap ones might work out economically even if they last half as long they only cost 1/4 as much but i dont buy them because theyre miserable to use, loud and uncomfortable with no power to speak of as theyre pretty well all 6 amp.. try cutting long rips in 1/4 plate or beveling heavy steel grinding welds ect with a 6 amp itll be miserable, with a 12 amp it just evaporates infront of you the cordless are getting alotbetter, i have the milwuakee fuel 5" and i use it all the time in the shop and take it with me to do jobs away from power and have confidence itll have the battery life, i always use it in the shop even with an oulet right beside me just so im not dealing with cords and ect its plenty powerful just spins at 8500 instead of 11000 rpm so its slightly slower i take out the 12 amp rat tail for heavy cutting/ grinding dont make the mistake of buying a 9" grinder as a home gamer unless youre ready to spend the money to buy disks by the box load, no stores like to stock the 9" stuff so they make you order a box full or charge you double the regular price for a single disk so you need to put up the 150-200$ for a 25 pack of cutting wheels.. they last longer cut deeper and give you much smoother straighter quicker cuts but its jsut hard to put up the money for the disks like that try looking up angle grinder hacks/attachments theyre very versatile tools with some creativity im not much for safety but angle grinders always bring out the safety classes, ear muffs when using the grinding wheel or cutting disk long term, i have the guards on all my grinders i only take them off to fit a disk or get into a place that the grinder limits and i dont enjoy doing that but you have to sometimes, it just sprays dust and sparks in your face 5x as much as it does with the guard on and ive shattered some disks the guard is really good at keeping the pieces out of your face
