How are you avoiding vermin ingress below your floor level?

Love your vids new sub here ^_^ Silly question as I’ve got a timber frame wall in my 70s house with brick and block gable and adjoining wall to my neighbour. I’m replacing a door for a window. Building out the frame. Outside in layers are Shiplap UPVC Cladding, breathable membrane attached to 18mm OSB with roofers lat attached for the cladding. The frame is 150mm in depth I’ve got 400mm inbetween the studs. For the insulation should I get 100mm PIR foil to leave an air gap for breathing mould purposes. The advice is so all over the place. Then aluminium foil tape, then a visqueen for the vapour control layer, then the plasterboard. Thanks very much, quality vids

Hi. If you’re changing a door to a window, needs to be to current regulations, so 0.18 u value. It’s not that easy from your description but… I think translates as your cladding onto battens forming a ventilated cavity onto a layer of insulation, then membrane, and then your OSB and studs, with your 100mm insulation between your studs. I’ve made a video about it here TIMBER FRAME v BRICK BLOCK Masonry- House Extension walls - Architect Builder’s 5 expert tips kzitem.info/news/bejne/qX6r1IydopaCf2k

Awesome vid. I’ve never heard of anyone changing the centres to minimise insulation wastage before, but I don’t see why not, it is expensive. I have tried just about everything you could possibly think of over the years when it comes to cutting PIR sheets, and have come to a very similar conclusion. I too use my Dewalt circular saw for the reasons you stated. I like to have a vac on hand and to use a fibre cement blade in my saw for this - they have far fewer teeth, so I find the dust is less fine and gets slightly less airborne, although still messy. It is very easy to make a jig to run your saw along for straight, repeatable cuts by screwing a batten to the edge of a piece of ply cut to size. If you make them a couple of mm smaller they should slide in beautifully without too much boshing needed. I hope that helps someone. Keep the vids coming!

Thanks. The jig for me takes more time but it’s a good idea too. Thanks a lot for all that information. Really helpful.

If you set out timber at 445 then what do you do when it comes to plasterboarding?

Just the floors at 445. Walls are 600 centres.

@@build-better-things ah, thought you’d said do for all timber, was like wtf?! Then spent the next hour thinking well, could cut down plasterboard, it’s cheap and easy to cut, maybe it is the better way 😂😂
