Great video, loved it! I planted a week ago my two melanocrysum cuttings in a way too big pot for their root system, because the moss pole I made just kept falling and it needed a bigger pot to support it. I had some overthinking, but I thought, well, if the soil drains well, it should be ok. So I made a really chunky soil mix, and that was it. I’m glad to hear confirmation from you, now my overthinking should stop for good.

Thank you for the vid. Really makes you see and understand what the plant REALLY needs. I want to ask; plants with aerial roots obviously can do with their roots being exposed to light whether below ground or above. But do plants without aerial root systems mind that they are exposed to light while in the see-through pots when normally they would be beneath the soil? Apparently not, but why?

Hi Jan, you have encouraged me to change over my pots to clear pots so I can “see” what’s going on with the roots without pulling the plant out of the pot all the time. In the US, (online) I’ve found 7.62 cm (3”), 10.16 cm (4”) (These come with domes with air holes which are helpful for retaining humidity in small plants) 12.7 cm (5”),15.24 cm (6”), 20.32 cm(8”), 22.86 cm(9”). I’ve also recently tried NZ tree fern fibre mixed with perlite for poles(Expensive, but wanted to try). Yes, it falls out more than moss, but not so bad with plants in cabinets. Good advice to choose pot based on root size. Your videos always informative and entertaining!😊

Great video. Can you link where you get your clear pots? Its hard to find sturdy clear pots. Also, I think when people are talking about up sizing a pot its because the roots and the soil are still attached. The way you showed your example was just with the roots exposed, so of course using the same size pots would work if you are not repotting with the soil attached. I do like this better because it pretty much makes repotting easier if repotting based on the size of the roots only.

Thanks for the explanation. I may have overshot pot size. I'd never thought about root size and water intake. I may have overshot it with repotting this week (I bought mature plant pot sizes), so I'll be very careful with watering those till I can add some perlite and orchid bark. I was wondering this morning why they're still so wet!

I know a few people who use clear pots inside black pots. Clear, in order to assess root health without disturbing them. And black is better for root health. They naturally grow in the dark. But the way you normally put the clear into decorative pots kinda achieves the same result.

I am probably one of the people who frustrate you with this question, and I appreciate your helpful video. My concern in asking dimensions was not so much for the plant. More the moss pole, since I am totally new to them. I noticed that the size of the bottom of your pot seems almost equal to the top. (Not much of a slant.) Here in the USA, I cannot find pots like that and was curious if it was important to keep the moss pole stable. I hope that made sense. Excited to start on the moss pole journey. Appreciate you.

Do you leave the soil around the roots and transplant the whole shebang into the new pot around the moss pole or do you remove the soil from the old pot and place the bare roots in front of the moss pole and add new soil in and around the new pot and moss pole? Hi Sydney Plant Guy, I have a question. I have some plants on poles that are %95 coco chunks and %5 spagnum moss. Thin layer of moss for the plants to attach well. I use dyna grow foliage pro liquid fertilizer which is similar to GT foliage focus. My system is recirculating hydroponic drip. I have a 100 gallon ro water reservoir that I mix the fertilizer in. For the last 5 months I have been just been refilling the resevoir when it is empty and mix in the fertilizer when the tank is full again. So basically all the water is either absorbed by the plant or evaporates into the air. Also I have never flushed the poles or pots and everything seems great. But recently its occured to me.... What happens to the fertilzer? Is it building up within the moss poles? I mean i know the plants absorb some but what happens to the rest? Does that fertilizer become inert or does it continue to build up even when the poles dry out completely. Sorry for the long question but lately this question has been on my mind. Any advice would be helpful. Thank you

Does choosing a pot that is snug to your plants roots cause slower growth? I always figured that if it stays in a small but snug pot, it doesn't tell the plant that it can expand its roots! Please someone advise! Any knowledge would be appreciated very much!! 😘
@sydneyplantguy
8 ай бұрын
Suppose judging by my plants I don’t think it stunts the plants growth :) but it also depends on the plant itself, the mix & the nutrients you provide. But in general, your thoughts are correct- plants need room to expand their root system if you want to get the most out of them. But too large of a pot can also be encouraging root growth instead of leaf growth
