Hello. Great video! Why dry ice and not compressed air?
@BlackwellsDryIceBlasting

Thank you! High Pressure Compressed air is a big part of it. We shoot Dry Ice Pellets in the high pressure air stream. The impact of the Dry Ice Pellets give us the capability to remove more than the air alone would.

Is this sticking of flour with the surface of the silo due to the electrostatic charge.
@BlackwellsDryIceBlasting

I'm sure that does play a part in it. Humidity and moisture inside the silo really effects how much bin scale sticks to the walls as well. A silo that sits outside will typically have heavier buildup than one that sits inside a climate controlled building.

Great video guys! How did you go with oxygen content in the silo? Did you need to run a fan with fresh air supply?
@BlackwellsDryIceBlasting
Жыл бұрын
Great question. Yes! We use a 12" blower and ductwork to push fresh air into the space. The CO2 would deplete the Oxygen in the silo very quickly without it. But with that much fresh air displacing the CO2, the Oxygen level never drops below an acceptable range. Atmospheric testing with air monitors is super important anytime you're dealing with a confined space.

So you were able to clean in the entire silo in 12 hours? I feel like it would take at least 12 to 16 hours to clean each one based on the rate of removal shown in your video...
@BlackwellsDryIceBlasting
Жыл бұрын
The silo in the video took every bit of 12 hours. They vary widely. The places that we clean on a regular basis are always better off. We have several customers that we can clean multiple silos in a day. The top 8 feet or so is always the worst. Since the product never touches the very top or the ceiling, the dust can become layered up and be tougher to clean. Typically, the farther down you go, the easier the scaling is to remove. So while the top may take us 6 hours, the rest goes a lot faster.

How much does a job doing silo work pay
@Nationof300

Not worth it
@BlackwellsDryIceBlasting

Our hourly pay rate is more than most Manufacturing facilities. Since we work long hours and pay time and a half overtime, our guys do very well. Brand new guys are paid for their 40 hour training week before they ever step foot on a silo cleaning job.

How much do you charge per square foot to dry ice blast a silo?
@BlackwellsDryIceBlasting
Жыл бұрын
We would charge by the day. MOST Silos can be completed in 1 day. The worst ones can take a day and a half. We cleaned one last week that was 100 ft tall, but only took 1 day. Then there are some smaller flour silos that consistently have moisture/ condensation issues that take a day and a half. I say all that to show that every case is different but we'd be in the ballpark of $4,000 per day. Lots of equipment, fuel, Dry ice, training and a well paid crew goes into cleaning silos.

We typically charge by the day. A well maintained flour silo can be completed in a day. Some of the bad ones can take a day and a half.

We try to mitigate all of the hazards before making entry. It sounds like what your describing was an engulfment fatality. We make sure that every confined space we go in is already empty and is locked out. We also have to make sure that there is no way for any product to be pumped into the silo on top of us. We have a thorough safety training program and a ton of safety equipment that goes along with a job like this.

So slow
@BlackwellsDryIceBlasting
Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment Svein! It's slower than pressure washing for sure. It usually takes us ALL day to finish up a silo. Sometimes a day and a half to make sure it's done right. The big perk to Dry Ice Blasting a silo is that its ready to be refilled as soon as we finish. Cleaning with water would need at least a couple days to dry out. Even a little moisture in a bulk ingredient storage vessel can spell disaster.
