The method I use is wetting an unused toothbrush with hot water and scrubbing the wax off the mesh. Make sure to dry off the earbud quickly, and also keep the earbud facing down so the water doesn’t seep into the speaker. Then you put your mouth on the small speaker grill (make sure the earbud is clean before you do that) and blowing air through to push the wax out. (Make sure not to strain too hard) it worked incredibly well and basically restored my earbuds to brand new condition

I just discovered that using an earplug (y'know, the kind that you use to reduce noise) to clean my earpods is a great solution! They're made of super soft foam to conform to the small nooks/crannies of earpods and it expands back to it's regular form for next-time use. Haven't seen anything on the web about this technique - so, i thought i'd place it here.

Holy cow, it worked wonderfully! I recently purchased some replacement rubber covers for my Bose SoundSport headphones and used this method to clean them up after they got a little bit of wax pushed down into the mesh. One earbud went almost entirely silent while the other had zero bass. After using fun tac (or mounting putty in the U.S.) method several times on each ear bud, the sound has returned entirely. I'm thrilled to have found an actual life hack that works! Thank you!

Hi Glen 👋 Man, thanks for writing this! I am super happy that you have your headphones working perfectly again. During 3 years, every time I tried something different to clean my EarBuds, I recorded footage of the process… eventually, I thought I had enough to make a fun video… I was already editing it when I stumbled upon blue-tack: the result was so impressive that I had to change the whole video… I would never expect that such “organic” side project would become the most viewed video of my channel! 🤣

Thank you for posting this. My iPod's ear buds are pretty old and recently have started sounding too quiet and one side was quieter than the other. Having finally decided that the problem wasn't simply wax in my ears, or a problem with the iPod itself, I found that simply trying to clean round the edges with a cocktail stick didn't do anything. I worried about using water for the reasons you mention in this video, so I was at a complete loss. I've now followed your recommendation and used some blue-tack (although I used a different make that's white too!), and hey presto! They came up like new and last night my iPod sounded perfect again. Can't thank you enough!! I think it's socially irresponsible to simply buy new ones, since it's not so good for the environment to keep throwing stuff away when it still works. OK, so some people re-cycle, but most still don't.

The enemy here is that super fine metal mesh. You can clean the outside surface of it, but inevitably over time, wax gets through to the inside, forming a solid thick blanket. When it finally reaches the speaker membrane, preventing it from vibrating, your earbuds stop working. The only way to prevent this from happening is to dissolve the wax. Blue tac is a temporary solution but it involves pushing stuff into the earbud, and then pulling it out. By the time you pull out the outside wax with the blue tac, you have already pushed wax further into the metal mesh, and the blue tac won’t be strong enough to pull all of it back out through those almost microscopic holes. Inside build-up will happen.
@GeekDetour
4 жыл бұрын
Well, nothing lasts forever... if we can clean it a few times instead of buying a new one every time sound gets bad, I think it is worth the method. There would be really nice to find a safe solvent that melts the wax away without destroying the whole thing 😃

Ha ha ha. Good question! 4 headphones :) The first 3 methods I tried on the same EarPod (original from Apple)... then, the washing machine finally ruined it... so I finally opened another original EarPod (that I already had bought) and I am still using it to this day - and I always clean it with BluTack. BUT, for the microwave and the Dremel jokes, I used fake knock-offs that I purchased for U$ 3 each

I usually remove the metal mesh with a pin, then use lighter to burn the ear wax. After it is burned I just rinse them in water and put them back in using tweezers. This works for me and it removes 100% of the ear wax, however this process can leave a permanent mark from the the pin on the metal mesh

I use a toothpick and lightly scrape around the outside to avoid pulling the mesh off, then lightly scrape back and forth on the mesh. FInish by blowing compressed air into the mesh, do this once 1-2 times a month and you'll never have an issue.

I was able to fix mine with just 2 cotton swabs. 1 - Dip one end of a cotton swab in hot water then scrub the speaker grill for about 1 minute in circular motion. 2 - you will see the molten wax building around the speaker as you scrub it 3 - remove the molten wax with the other end of the swab 4 - repeat it with the other swab and speaker 5 - you just saved 20 dollars

Yeah, you are probably right - looking at the analytics, less than half of viewers really get to the Blu-tack part. Yeah, I did :) My FIRST tip: on the titles, include specific information, example: "installing the centrifugal clutch on Yamaha MK 3200 Kart motor" (I have no idea what is your kart, but you get the idea). Generic titles won't help you. You must do "How to remove the Spark Plug on the XYZ Suzuki Kart Motor" - more people will find your videos. Be specific. SECOND: Only publish real VIDEOS - not slideshows. Don't make a video using still photos. Nobody likes it. THIRD: I recommend every youtuber to study the Free courses of the KZitem Creator Academy - yes, from KZitem itself! creatoracademy.kzitem.infoeducation Now, good luck! Be the best KZitemr you can be :) (I read in your "about" section that you are open to constructive criticism, so, here was mine)

I tend to use blu-tac to get the solids and most of the debris off of the airpods and then i use a cotton swap with a little bit of methelayted spirits (95% ethanol) to get the stubborn residue out. Make sure to hold the mesh down JUST IN CASE the spirits damage the electronics.
