I got our chandeliers via ebay and mostly they were poorly packed and dirty . Many wires were put in back to front so the trick is to be systematic and careful . Count all the holes in the frames and check the separated crystals to start with . Put a clean tea towel on a tray .and lay all the "crystal strings " in tidy rows . Do this near the kitchen sink .Pour warm soapy water in the tray to soak all the crystals. The tea towel will stop them moving around. Not Hot Water, That makes lead crystals go cloudy . Clean the crystals with a stiff bristle paint brush . Short hairs is better . Use a gentle jabbing action on the crystals . Do that without lifting the crystals .Then gently turn them over and clean the other sides. One crystal string at a time. The tea towel has all the dirt by now . Stage 2 , Get another tray and tea towel to hold the crystals after you rinse them ,one by one (or string by string). Use lots of warm water in a plastic basin for rinsing. Then lay them out in rows to dry . Don`t try to rub them dry with a cloth or the wires will catch on the cloth and do some damage . Avoid using the crystal to bend the wires. Use a pair of fine pliers to work on the wires only .No leverage on the lead glass itself . I fitted Maestro (Lewin ) ceiling plugs for my chandeliers but they are out of stock now or discontinued . They were the very best idea .

For colourful chandeliers with lead crystals a halogen clear glass bulb works best . Opaque lamp bulbs do nothing for the colours. But Halogen bulbs are hot and use more electricity .They show stripes of coloured light all over the walls too . It`s fun to see that but it gets a bit too much . A reflector in a window to direct sunlight on the chandelier is better .

What about when the crystals cannot easily be removed from the chandelier? These chandeliers are from 1935 and the wires are extremely brittle and close together. I need a way to cover the table under the chandelier and something, hopefully, to just spray the crystals with to clean them....ugh. Not to mention that I am getting OLD and cannot climb up and down a ladder to even try to take them off. It is hard enough just to change the bulb in the smaller one at the side of our stairs much less try to take each crystal down from a three tiered chandelier. Please help me!!
