Today we show you a way to remove rust on an electric motor, for me specifically on the stacked lamination of the armature (anchor) and stator. The electric motor seen in the video belongs to an electric drill I have found in a crate with its motor opened, so I assume rust has developed as it has been spending some time in this state in a humid environment.
► YOU WILL NEED
- Steel wool #0000 (#0000 is important since is the finest grain of steel wool). You could alternatively use abrasive cloth / sandpaper, but I prefer steel wool since it creates a lot less of really fine metallic dust / particles that could contaminate the engine. Steel wool also allows me to make a little cleaning pad that I can use with the top of my finger. I get here perfect control and can see what I’m sanding. Sanding any wiring is a big no go!
- Cleaning gear: Brush / air compressor / vacuum cleaner
► DISCLAIMER
Always make sure you operate in a safe and secure manner.
For this project, take your time, work slowly and check progress.
It is essential to thoroughly clean the motor after removing the rust since fine metallic particles left may create shorts in the engine.
