Try using a 20 gauge shotgun bronze bore brush for the gas tube cleaning, works wonders for removing the carbon residue within.

Want advice? Gas tubes never really need to be cleaned unless you've used corrosive ammo or shot so much that the piston head is seizing up inside the tube. As for cleaning the barrel, once again I wouldn't worry about cleaning it unless you've shot corrosive ammo. Cleaning after shooting corrosive ammo is a bit more involved and there's plenty of videos on it. The only real cleaning you should worry about when shooting non-corrosive is what you can see when you pop off the dust cover. Basically, the bolt carrier group, the fire control group, the receiver rails, bullet guide, and MAYBE the chamber if you start to get stuck cases. Clean up everything with your favorite cleaner (I use CLP, an old rag and toothbrush) and then lube areas where you see wear in the finish. I prefer grease for the bolt carrier group, the rails it slides on in the receiver, and the face of the hammer but I use a few drops of thick synthetic motor oil inside the fire control groups pivot points. Point being, a good AK is such a robust design that it doesn't matter what you clean or lube it with as long as it's not corrosive to metal and your lube is pretty heat resistant. (I use yellow brake grease that comes in a tube) If you do all this, you should be good for at 3000 rounds before you want to repeat any maintenance steps......unless you shoot corrosive ammo or end up getting the gun drenched in a downpour.

@@billyfreeman5803 Thanks. Does the gas tube actually trap gases and help the piston rod go back? Or does it just prevent gas from being sprayed on the operator? It seems the rod would go back without the tube, just from how it interfaces with the gas block. I also can't tell how the bullet guide works. That funky little metal piece by the chamber somehow guides the bullet in?

@@mikebastiat The gas tube absolutely helps to trap SOME gasses that assist the bolt carrier group in cycling. That's why you'll see some gas tubes that have tiny gas ports on the sides of them. These are usually used as an attempt to bleed off some of the gasses in overgassed rifles. Overall, you mentioned two of the most important benefits that the gas tube offers. It guides the piston head into the gas block in a much smoother fashion than if there was no tube and having the tube does prevent gasses from spraying directly out of the gas block towards the shooter's face. As for the bullet guide, it is the piece of metal with a rivet right in the middle it located between the face of the chamber in front of the magazine well. It doesn't look like much, but it's there to act like a sort of spacer to ensure the bullet doesn't go nose down for whatever reason and get caught below the face of the chamber.
