I'm a retired engineer and hears my handy man solution. First, clean it all out as was described above but, when it comes time to put the salt back in, take the bag and poke a bunch of holes in it. I use a small garden tool with four pointy claw like things. Anyway, poke it full of holes from the top to the very bottom of the bag. Then put the entire bag in the tank. WHY? The reason the salt clogs the intake ports is because when the salt breaks down it gets past the Sive at the bottom of the tank and starts collecting around the intake port. When that first bag gets low pour its remnants into a second previously used bag that has holes too but has an open top. The residue bag also stays in the tank. A few things this does. A) it prevents the intake ports from getting clogged from partially dissolved salt B) if you ever need to get all the salt out of the tank for inspecting it makes it really easy. C) it uses all the salt more efficiently (no waste from cleaning clogs) Note; there is only so much salt that can be dissolved in the water so filling the tank to the top with salt is actually promoting the clog problem. Oh, a 1/2 cup of bleach once in while on regen day can also helpful. My water is perfect since started doing it this way.

Mine was not like hard crystal salt at the bottom. It was like salt mud around the brine well tube. I suck it up with a shop vac. I wonder if that fixes the salty water problem.
I’ve neglected our system. I have salt forming outside the unit. Getting ready to take care of it it.

I just discovered a massive bridge in my water softener, just moved in about 4 months ago so I'm not sure how long it's been there. I have tried a stick, a garden trowel, and even a hammer, and nothing is breaking it up! It's totally solid at the "5" level. Any advice? Can I pour boiling water on it to try to soften the bridge? P.s. thanks for the great video!

I heard you could pour hot water on it. It should soften it. I use a large ice fishing spoon to scrape it.

I had the same problem. I eventually got my 3 foot crowbar, CLEANED IT and was able to easily and in a slow controlled manner push it through the bridge and break it up. I had to be very careful not to damage the bottom plastic piece, walls or any internal parts. It's my go to solution now!

@@petenicholls718 ya.. some kind of bar with weight to it... I ended up using a bar used for digging post holes... again having to be VERY careful about hitting the bottom or any plastic parts.

Found this on another video: Unplug and fill with water (not full, but alot) keep it like this for 4 hours. Then remove completely the water (with a bucket, if needed) salt on the bottom will be loose again, easy to manipulate. Please do not throw the salty water near trees or herbs, cuz they might die. And, of course, don't forget to replug after.

While cleaning out the "mush salt" in the bottom of our WaterBoss, I found a mouse. Yuck! How did it get in there? My guess is that it came wit a bag of salt which sometimes lays on skids in warehouses or stores. Sometimes the bags can have a little split somewhere that a mouse can get into the bag. Other than that, maybe it got into our softener in the house, but who knows at this point. How long was it in there? I am now thinking about sanitizing the softener. Bleach can be used per the owners manual, but I need to be careful not to use too much which could destroy the bead bed. The hard part is cleaning out all the mushed salt. The plan is to take the unit out and clean it outside using the hose. Not sure about tipping the unit over on it's side. With the bead bed build inside the tank, I could damage something. We had a Sears unit before and it was easy to remove and clean. Parts kits were always available too. Not so sure about parts for the WaterBoss. Thanks for all the helpful tips here. I would have never found the mouse if I had not used the hot water idea to get the brine tub out.

Wow I'm so glad you brought this to my attention. I've never heard of this happening before and that could be a serious issue. I didn't some research about this and apparently its happened to many others. There is clear instructions on how to disinfect your softener and other water systems on google. I'm going to make a video about this, if I never heard of it, I'm lots of people haven't as well. It's good to be aware that this can happen. Again, thanks for sharing 🙂 P.S. Good luck with cleaning your water softener and system.

HELP. No bridge, it has all crystalized like concrete. I used a steel pole like thing, then I used a sledge hammer and I pounded and pounded and was almost able to make it to the bottom. I poured hot water, waited 15 minutes and went back at it again pounding and pounding and pounding and slowly, a little bit easier than before made it close to the bottom (don't want to hit the bottom in case I poke a hole. So that's where I am at, and my arm is soar from swinging the sledge hammer. Any advice on how I can break it all up would be great.

If a small bit of dirt gets into the brine tank when using a broom to break up a salt clog, will that contaminate your water? Or should I remove it promptly from the salt?

Hey can a clog cause low water pressure in your house
@GettingItDoneRepairs
3 ай бұрын
If you bypass the water going to your water softener you will be able to see if the pressure changes. But I have a hunch it may be the water pressure tank in your home. There is a bladder in the tank and it may have a leak. I have a video about that on my channel as well.

Crystal salt is the worst. Pellets are superior and a grid in the bottom of the tank. I've been using Winsor salt pellets and never had a problem with salt bridges or clogs. Salt pellets and the water level in the brine tank should equal.
