In this video, I show the conversion process for changing your standard, run of the mill tap switch into a switch that will work with Boss effects pedals in the control circuit, specifically for the Boss SY-200 in this video but most other Boss effects pedals are similar. The process is very easy and, even with the cost of the foot switch I have and the replacement switches, cheaper than an actual Boss FS-6 foot switch pedal.
The conversion is required because unlike Line 6 HX series and nearly every other pedal or floor board with an external control pedal jack, Boss effects use a Closed Switch in the circuit rather than an Open Switch. In other words, Boss pedals read the interruption of a circuit as a signal to change whatever parameters on the effect instead of the completion of a circuit like many other pedals out there.
This video is for those of us who aren’t invested in MIDI controllers for their setup, but rather use a mostly analogue signal chain. This SY-200 is the only pedal I have that supports MIDI, so for me it was much more cost effective to change out a couple switches than to invest in the equipment that would allow me to control it via MIDI.
