#6: Given the *rapidly rising price of food*, parents may actually SAVE money by spending the $13k required to send the child on exchange for ten months. 😉🤪

Hello Laura! I truly loved this video, I was just wondering if you could film an updated video on what to pack for an exchange year. Maybe you could include what to pack clothing wise ( though I know this differs with the location ) but also packing tips to be able to make the most of the luggage space. ( like using vacuum bags for winter coats, etc ). Also, as it is highly likely you’ll have more things to bring back upon the time that you’re going back to your home country, what are some solutions to make extra space/ bring back more than you brought. Any other updated tips, if you had any, I would also find extremely helpful!

You could always send your winter items ahead via UPS. You could then ship the winter stuff and accumulated items back home in the Spring the same way. Dragging a bunch of luggage around is a drag.

I second that the idea of packing for a year without sounds stressful I can't even pack for a sleepover easily

I am trying my absolute best to convince my parents to send me back to the UK. I have been passively persuading for 2 years. Now I have spent 3 days researching non-stop, I am in a crucial year (11) and I want to complete my GCSEs in the UK. Any advice?

Your second point is the most important one I think. All the exchange students I met (a few hundred) have matured a lot during their exchange. Usually this can only be seen from the outside in how different they behave when coming back. Language is a tool you can acquire at home, the experience you gain from being immersed into a different family/culture tops language skills by far (and would be an import criteria for me as an employer)

I saw the video and I was like ooo this one is for me Edit: I'm also 13 rn and trying to convince my parents. my mom is ok with it but my dad thinks that this is just a thing I'll forget about in a month. He is also worried about the price and sending me away. My dad worrys a lot basically.

Apply anyway. You can always redraw your application if you change your mind in one month. I would worry like your dad but having had the experience I would of course allow you to, no wish you to go. And my parents had to apply for some grants because they did not know how to pay for it at that time.

I was in the same situation as you. But I invested a lot of my time in planning it out so they quickly realized I was being serious. Then I applied and got the CBYX scholarship so the price wasn't an issue anymore. If you want to do it, just keep pushing and show them you're willing to put effort into your dream

My mom thinks that 1 year is really long and she's scared that i'll be homesick. But i don't want to only do 6 months because i don't want to go back to school after 6 months in the US.

My mom really doesn‘t want me to do an exchange year at all… But she said if i would do one the 5 monts. But i talked to people and they said the got used to the surrondings and everything after about 3-4 months and then already leaving.. And it also almost costs the same… But my parents are also worried i might get homesick and i have no idea how to prove them wrong

Hi Laura, Your advice is really helpful, thanks. I’m in 9th grade rn and I wanna do an exchange year in 11th grade. My parents are very against it and I’m not so sure if even my friends really support me. They all say it’s not the right thing for me to do, and because they’ve put a lot of negative advice on the table, now I start to become worried that they might me right about it. I’ve dealt with a lot of homesickness in the past, but I believe that I’ve overcome that and could be ready for the exchange year. I think that after I get used to my new surroundings there, I won’t have to deal with much homesickness anymore anyway. What’s your opinion? Do you think it’s the right decision doing an exchange year looking from my perspective?

If you feel like you really wanna do it and It’s your dream then go for it and don’t take your friends advice, talk to your parents and tell him why you wanna do it calmly ofc! I am also in ninth grade and looking forward to doing an exchange year when I’m in 12th grade ❤ good luck with talking to them 🤍🤍

Very good question. I think I will pick it up in more depth in a Q&A. Most of my family was really sad, my friends were sad too but also excited for me and wrote me lovely letters. It was quite a common thing to do. I think 5-10 people from my grade went to do exchange years so it was normal for my class mates. But everybody wanted to know about my experiences.
