I became a widow at 41 after my husband’s tragic 7 year battle with Leukemia. Our son was 10 and we got all the help we needed through individual amazing support groups. My advice is to never turn down and invite for at least that first year. People want to help! I found so much love and help from unexpected places A different kind of grief now though. Dealing with my Son’s total abandonment encouraged by his now wife. I have never met my little grandson. I am hurting like never before.

Oh Donna! I am so sorry!! That is incredibly hard!! I admire you for continuing to walk in spite of your pain. But I know that’s really hard! It seems like that is what is happening with my oldest son. I have not seen my oldest son and his family since my husbands tragic death in 2021, he was 55 year old. This is all so devastating, I am so sorry for your loss and heartache!! 🥰

Donna - that is so unimaginable. I am so sorry for the loss of your wonderful husband. I am doubly sorry for the cruelty of your son’s wife that in turn his turning his back on you. I am very sorry you are dealing with that kind of pain. It is shocking how much we mothers can give to our children, and in the future be mistreated horribly. I hope that one day he comes to his senses.

Oh Donna I'm so sorry ! MY sister was in the same situation and her two daughters abandoned her encouraged by her Ex. She went through sorrow and depression but my advice to her was to know they also needed her love and eventually would be back in her life, and it happened after many years. Be hopeful and get busy with your life, that is what I learnt from my own loss.❤

I am 61 and lost my dear husband after 1 year of a severe illness. He was the great love of my life since I was 17. After 35 years of our loving marriage I feel so sad, desperate and lonely without him. Unfortunately our only son died already 17 years ago, so I am now without any family. Thank you very much dear Beth for your helpful advices and I hope that I will overcome this so very hard time of grief and that I will see again a positive light and a purpose of life for my upcoming future.... Thank you for sharing these very important stages of grief. My sister and brother and I lost our parents within two years of each other. Mom died from complications of Alzheimer’s disease and our Dad from complications from dementia. For about 5 years they were both in different nursing homes, at the same time. It was probably the darkest time of our lives. Dad will be gone for 4 years on the 30th of June, and Mom for six years on August 14th. We miss them terribly, we were a very close family. That was how we were raised, God first, family second. We feel blessed to have been raised in a loving, Christen family. All Is Well With My Soul was our Grandmother’s favorite song. Thank you very much for the wonderful video.

Grief is so individual that's for sure. I worked in hospice and in talking with resident's spouses after, a few wives said the same thing about their journey. While enveloped in their grief they realized life was moving forward without them all around them and they had to make a conscious effort to join back in again. Great video.

Dear Beth-I have followed you for years and I remember Mr Styles. I appreciate you for sharing this story. I am so blessed, my husband and I live in an apt that my daughter and SIL had built along with their home. We enjoy our grands daily and I love this life ( it’s been 2 yrs since we moved from our house). When we first moved my dear sister was diagnosed with stage 4 uterine cancer and she passed 2 months ago. She lived close enough that I saw her just about every day, took her to appts, spoke with her several times a day and the loss is so overwhelming even now. I miss her terribly. I have so many people around me and sometimes I feel so lonely. Again I thank you for taking the time to speak on grief.

Coming home at the end of the day to silence, for me was the worst part of my day. Thank you, Beth, for the most concise and thoroughly presented videos on grief from a widow’s perspective I have seen, and I’ve watched many over the last two years! My beloved husband died on Mother’s Day in 2021. We met as musicians when I became his piano accompanist 40 years ago. It took ten years before he proposed to me beneath the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, but our life had been filled with music , a wonderful friendship, and Christian service, something we both had both grown up with. It all continued thru our 27 years of marriage., and the Lord blessed us with three children whom we home schooled, and they participated with us in many music and theatrical endeavors. God chose to take our 4th child directly to Heaven before it was born, but I am comforted knowing that Ben and our child are now together. Our life was filled with many challenges, mostly financial and physical, but though we were “poor as church mice” as the saying goes, we still lived a rich full life, and the memories of it are a precious treasure I will never take for granted! I have also been blessed in being able to live my passion, our passion, which is music, and that has helped me tremendously on my grief journey. I am on the music staff at my church, and have not missed a scheduled Sunday playing the organ since Ben died, and, I played at his funeral! There were plenty of people who thought I was crazy for doing so, and one of them insisted that I would crash! I’m more insulted by that comment now than I was back then! Oh, I’ve had many moments of deep grief, especially when triggered by hearing songs we once performed, but my “crashes” have come when having to deal with the things I am totally inept at, like dealing with car issues! But thru it all, I think I have instinctively done a lot of things you suggested in your video. When I have gotten myself in trouble, I think it’s been because I’ve tried to do what others expected of me. I’m becoming more bold in standing up for myself now, even though there are those in my life who aren’t taking my change in attitude too well! And though traveling alone is somewhat intimidating, I’m going to St. Louis next week to celebrate the 30th anniversary of our engagement beneath the Arch, and spend time with my sister showing her some of the places which hold special memories for me. My precious Ben will go with me in my heart.

Thank you for this video Beth. I remember lying in bed after my husband passed away and thinking "I can't believe I'm 54 and a widow." How am I going to live the rest of my life without my rock, my partner, the love of my life? I chuckled when you mentioned taking out the trash. I remember crying my heart out the first time I had to do that. I said to myself, "Get a grip Mary. You can do this. You are being silly" Looking back, I don't think it was so much the trash, but rather the loss of everything that my husband did for me and our family. His tremendous love for us. The one thing I miss a lot in the winter is that he would always have the driveway and steps shoveled of snow, my car cleared off and running so it was warm when I left for work. I regret not telling him more how much I appreciated that. It became something I took for granted. It's been over 8 years for me and life is good just different. You have to embrace every phase of your life.

Thanks for sharing. One of my first big breakdown moments was putting gas in my car. In our 35 years together he not only washed and took care of the cars but, he always filled up my gas tank. So many little { and big } tasks he did that were taken for granted. I was 58 when i lost my husband. It’s going on two years this September. I’m still deep in my grief. Knowing that we’re all going to go through similar experience , makes me stop wallowing and pitying myself. I hope you continue to heal and have a fulfilling life. Wishing you the best

This is such a beautiful video. I have dealt with family loss over the years. I was only 20 when my grandmother developed Alzheimer’s, she was the most important person in my life. Dealing with that and her eventual death changed me. During the 19990s I dealt with losing my father, grandfather then my grandmother along with a divorce. Loss is always so hard. I don’t know if I have gotten better with it now in my late 50s or not. I love all your suggestions, my natural inclination is to isolate myself and you are right that doesn’t help at all. I also love in the list you shared the death of pets was acknowledged. I have dealt with that more than once and it is extremely painful. Prayers to everyone suffering loss of any kind. Thanks Beth for your words of wisdom, we all need to know there are ways to cope and life can go on!

I met my second husband ten years after divorcing my first husband. My kids were grown, and it was time for me! I met him in 2005. We got married seven months later! Everything was going great, and we bought a beautiful home together. Not even a year after we bought our home, he got pancreatitis. He was in the ICU 68 days, hooked up to a lot of machines, and in a medically induced coma. Sadly, he got sepsis, and didn’t make it. I was by his side every one of those 68 days, and lost 40 pounds due to stress. I lost him in December of 2010. We would have celebrated our fifth wedding anniversary that coming Valentines Day. I never thought I would be a widow at the age of 52, but some things we can’t control. I sold our home, and moved into a rental condo. I couldn’t even walk out the door for weeks. I had been seeing a therapist while he was hospitalized to help me cope. I ended up seeing her weekly for seven years! It’s now been thirteen years since I lost him, and I’m still living alone. I do have triggers from time to time, but have survived. I’m fortunate to have my two children and seven grandchildren living close by. I took it a day, then a month, then a year at a time. There was a point where I didn’t know whether or not I would survive, but I did! ❤

Only belief in Jesus Christ who died on the cross for our sins can give us hope for now and eternity. When He forgives our sins, we are reborn into a supernatural life that gives us victory and healing no matter our loss. Without faith in Him, we only have temporary happiness. Thank you for your thoughtful video. I lost my husband 9 years ago when I was 56. It was so hard at the time. My children were still young, high school and college and being the rock for them helped me to get through. I have found that saying yes to invitations even when I feel like staying home has helped tremendously. Joining book clubs, going out for coffee (even if it’s by myself), taking an exercise class, just being around others helps to keep me connected. All the best to everyone on this journey or helping someone else.

This is very sensitive sharing of grief, thank you, Beth. My husband died suddenly 13 years ago at the age of 41. The greatest piece of advice I received was 'everyone can write their own book on grief'. Your point that there is no right or wrong way to grieve is spot on. I have learned to manage my grief and understand that although my life is not the one I planned, it is good. I am healthy, have a loving family and very supportive friends, a variety of interests, and keep myself busy. I count myself lucky and remind myself daily that I have a lot to be thankful for ❤

Beth, I've been following your videos almost from the beginning when you first started. I remember when you told us of your husband's passing and how so sad I felt for you. I can't imagine being in that place how much struggle it can be especially at first. My mother lost my dad (in 80s) in 2017. She stayed the same in some areas of life and in others she slightly changed and it was fully ok because that is how she had to grieve and adjust. Your tips are very valuable to us all. Thank you for such encouragement and strength. I know I'm nearly 60 and still miss my daddy so much. He was so reliable and knew how to fix anything with just a call away. In some ways when my daddy passed I had to learn how to depend on myself finding out how to fix some things in the house or just plain good advice. I think it has made me stronger in those ways. I know he will be in Heaven when I get there!

Thank you! It has been two and a half years since cancer took my husband of 57 years. He was very wise! When he retired from the successful business he had for 49 years , he told me he was done dealing with money and now it was my turn .We have a beef cattle farm so I had to learn to make the decisions to keep it on the profitable side . I have learned a lot since he is gone. As I said, he was so wise! Still working on the depressed Side of life but am coping better. Thank you!

Thank you so much, Beth. I lost my husband 2 years ago to suicide. We were together 40 years and married for 30 of those years. We had no children and have no family, making this nightmare even worse. I'm trying to get through this. It's so difficult.

Thank you for this heart felt post. I have an advanced education degree and taught some of what you spoke of. When I was a ten year old, I was suddenly "aware" of some things that was going to happen in my future. I suddenly knew that my mother would pass when I was age 16, and there was another loss before I was 21 which I thought of as happening to myself being so very young. My mother did pass, on my 16th birthday as I fore knew. The second loss ended up being our beautiful, extremely kind 20 year old son, a month after Christmas and just before he reached age 21. I have heard that my being intuitive is a blessing; it is hard at times as you might imagine. I came across a wonderful writing that spoke to me very profoundly, If I may share it with you. This is part of a eulogy written by a priest. Please look up "Death Is Nothing At All"; it is amazingly powerful.

I have been following your videos but just stumbled upon this one and let me tell you how much that it resonates with me. I too, lost my husband of 37 years, my best friend 5 years ago. He too, had cancer. We were both 61 at the time. Life eventually got better. However, there would be days that grief is still very much alive. I have been traveling since. My husband and I were world travelers. So I like to keep that tradition alive. I also appreciate another great video from you about tips for women traveling solo. I will keep these tips in mind. So just a note to say thank you for speaking to my heart. Keep up the good work.

Although I’m not the one to hide and cut off my friendships, it was shocker to me that some friends cut off the friendship because from now on I’m single and perhaps a threat? Already I lost friends because of covid and their opinions and now I have lost more because of the death of my partner.

Thank you for this. I am on the precipitous of a divorce. It has been 5 years since the beginning but I am finally ready to move forward. It has just occurred to me that what I am going through is grief. There has been anger, embarrassment, and mostly, guilt for what is happening to my children. I realize that grief is a process and this is exactly what I’ve been going through. I know the journey isn’t over, maybe just beginning but I feel like I have a better, healthy understanding now.

Thank you Beth for this video. Excellent advice & timely for me. I am still grieving the loss of my cousin 2 years ago. She was also my best friend for 75 years. I am recovering but there are times when I slip back. I do have my male partner of 30 years & my sister who are supportive as well as my fur baby. You are so spot on about the small things that also become important. Take care Beth. I love your content . ❤
