Maha! Such a great video of describing the verb “understand” to Non-Arabic speakers.. ❤️😍 As a native Arabic speaker, I would say that this is one of the complicated verbs, because what you mentioned is only one case for that verb, in addition to that, there are: - When you want to say a general fact e.g “I understand Arabic” we use it as the usual verbs starting with ba (Ana bafham Arabi أنا بفهم عربي) Or (I don’t understand Japanese = Ana ma bafham Yabani أنا ما بفهم ياباني) - Also, if you’re listening at that moment to a lecturer for example you would use the continuos tense (ma 3am bafham shu a3ed bye7ki ما عم بفهم شو قاعد بيحكي = I am not understanding what he’s saying)..

Is this related to the active participle being more of an adjective? Like when they say ana rayih/rayha/rayheen ? does this mean that you use the adjective when you're in a present situation not "understanding" ....do you use the proper verb (ana ma bifham) when saying something more permanent like "i don't understand arabic" ?

Gabriel Hamdan Haha I’ll give you a quick peak, in the past continuous tense, انا كنت فاهم literally means I am a person who understood . Or انا فهمت in a past tense verb sense form. Both are correct and used depending on situation. :))
