Those Cessnas with carbs are cold running beasts and infamous for carb ice up to around 60F I’m told. The reason I asked was it usually involves very low power settings like slowing down to land. That’s why you ALWAYS want to use the carb heat when landing lest ye forget at that very inopportune time.

If you ever have to put it down on the highway I'd recommend you call things into the FAA and your insurance company yourself ASAP. When I had a incident in my Maule the MI troopers had things all kinds of screwed up. They just don't have experience with aircraft and combine that with the fact that they can't accept being wrong and will try and save face no matter what it costs you including your freedoms. The Trooper I had to deal with tried to get a tow company to cut the wings off of my M4 to be able to tow it off the highway. He refused to listen to reason and let me ask the farm next to the highway if I could drag my plane through the fence into his corn field to properly disassemble it. He couldn't comprehend that I was going to pay for the corn I might damage in doing so. He also told the FAA that I ran out of gas when it was a problem with a fuel line caused during the annual. It took me forever to get things cleared up with the FAA and insurance company because of his refusal to correct his mistake. As for the cops wanting to chop my plane up, my insurance agent was able to get in touch with the farmer and we drug it into the corn field where we were going to disassemble it properly. But after the mechanic fixed the line we flew it out instead. I was going to pay the farmer to cut a runway but he had a better idea that worked quite well ;-)

I love the humor in these edu-torials. XD Something that every pilot should always have at the forefront of their mind is what to do in an emergency: Aviate. Navigate. Communicate. As soon as you declare an emergency, the rulebook goes flying out the window along with whatever just broke on your aircraft. Do what must be done to win the now losing battle against gravity and come out alive. Nobody ever died from all the paperwork involved dealing with the FAA, NTSB, and insurance adjusters after an incident or accident. Unless you somehow get a papercut that gets infected with a super aggressive VRSA strain, then you're boned. (Quick critique: the level mixing between the added sound effects and your voiceover was so out of wack it was hard to hear what you were saying at times.)

I had an interesting PPL instructor back in 1970. As part of power loss training he’d pull power at seemingly random moments, nothing unusual about that. But this day we departed LGA heading west to Lincoln Park airport. Roughly halfway between Teterboro and Newark is where he simmed loss of power. Teterboro was very tempting but looked a bit too far. Newark was even further away. We were directing over the Meadowlands south of Route 3. Altitude was 2000 feet or less with no farm land or suitable parkland in sight. I then had a feeling of you have to be joking, right? No joke, my only option was the New Jersey Turnpike. While doing the requisite restart attempts, I set up an approach to the southbound lanes. He said to continue. Normally we’d go down to 50 feet or so but today he said go ahead and give it a light touch and go. The catch to the story is this was shortly before the western spur opened in 1970. It was a Sunday, no construction workers around, the road was newly paved and marked. Signs and other obstructions were not yet in place. It sure looked like a long clear runway to both of us. Frankly it was wider than Lincoln Park which was a very narrow gravel strip at the time. I still travel on the NJT but in the customary manner alongside annoying earthbound traffic.

Thanks for this Paul et al. I'd say it's more reporting too. All those dash cams and phones... When I gamed this one out years ago, I figured the best bet would be to come in with plenty of vector. Get low over traffic from behind, even while overtaking rapidly, so everyone can see you. Then it's last notch of flaps when over your best gap and you're scrubbing the last of the energy off and possibly going backwards over oblivious cars, descending into the gap. Going from faster than traffic to slower. All the while there is spare energy to do stuff, including getting away from the road if it proves too dodgy. I like that line about how the insurance company owns the plane from the moment the engine fails. In drills I say, "F$@% the Cessna!" at that point, to reinforce that trying to save the aircraft is wrong - only the people matter.

Although humorously alluded to in the video, I'd like to state it directly: The vast majority of drivers have exactly zero experience handling a car at its performance limits. Expect people to freeze up or skid out. Ever see skid marks that curve off to the side of the highway? Those are usually because someone tried to brake and swerve at the same time, increasing their braking distance and decreasing their turn rate. Low closing speed is important. Oh, and clear the road as fast as safely possible. That goes for car breakdowns/collisions too. Just because your vehicle can be clearly seen from a long ways off does not mean no one will drive straight into it.

Be very careful of "closer rates". They can be deceiving. The really important variable is negative acceleration. Ex: Two cars traveling at 60 mph meet with a closure rate of 120 mph. Ex: One car traveling at 60 mph hits a bridge. Which one has the higher closure rate? Which one has the higher negative acceleration? Ans: Both have the same negative acceleration, but the closure rates are radically different.

It isn't a crash landing. It is an "off-airport landing". It is only a crash if I break the airplane :) There is no excuse, no tolerance, no good reason to EVER run out of gas in an airplane. I witnessed a night time road landing just outside of Tampa during the summer of 2016. From where I first saw him, to where he finally stopped, he managed to avoid 4 sets of power wires crossing the road. No injuries or damage to property. The plane was towed to a bowling alley where it sat for 2 to 3 days if I remember right. It was almost comical to see it anchored down on the side of the road during my commute.

Hahhh! Great presentation. I actually had never considered the wind direction on an emergency landing on the highway! Thank You!

Wind direction has to be a VERY minor consideration. Landing with traffic is THE major consideration for highway landings... That may eliminate 2 lane roads with traffic moving in opposite directions. Other than that wires/over passes, the volume of traffic (in the lanes you plan to use) tunnels, etc. may foreclose the option for a road landing.

Interesting video, but I would have stressed that landing on a road should be the last resort. Go for a field or body of water if there is one available. I understand going for the road in a very dense urban area with nowhere else to go...

Rotsa ruck finding one pilot to even give that thought the time of day. I have not met a pilot in the past 30 years that would not say 1. unoccupied roadway 2. occupied roadway 3. absolutely anything else. I grew up with the highest, I mean the highest respect and regard for pilots. I have since learned that my heroic admiration was misplaced.

@@Bill_Woo There are very little risks for motorists when a small aircraft lands on a highway, the drivers will see what the plane is trying to do and move out of the way (as seen in this video many times), small aircraft are also much lighter than your average car and impact speed is going to be minimal. Landing on an unknown field poses quite alot of risks for the planes occupants however, so if you compare small risks for motorists to big risks for plane occupants it makes sense, whenever there is a good wide road without alot of traffic on it and no airport close by i think it would be my first option too.

@@Dudeisthere So let me see if I get this: a 10% chance of killing an innocent life who did not agree to the risks of an air crash is preferable to a 50% change of dying by the person who is the direct reason for the crash. Uh huh. I see that my assessment of pilots remain intact. And people move out of the way of something approaching from the rear? I must have been out sick the day they explained that one.

@@Bill_Woo I’m landing on the road - I’m in a glorified aluminum can, not a steel framed automobile with air bags. You are free to think whatever you want though.

Regarding the comment at the end about "baby on board": When I was a little kid (~1970), I used to ride in 'the pit', which was the little space behind the back seat of VW bugs. There was also a little sort-of rumble-seat (facing rearward!) in the very back of our Ford Country Squire station wagon. Because rear-enders weren't discovered until at least 1980.

"baby on board", "mother-in-law in trunk", "caution horses", like I am going to drive any differently because of YOUR cargo?? LOL "Nitroglycerine on board", OK, maybe that guy gets the caution flag out, but otherwise I am way more afraid of you that you should be of me. Soccer moms take note. Thanks for the great video Paul.

BRAVO! This video is just what ALL GA pilots and student pilots should see today! The FAR's have been written over the years for an environment that has markedly changed over the years: EXPONENTIALLY-swelling population growth and corresponding civil and private development have removed "wide open spaces" from the environment so much so, whereas as much as 90% useta to be suitable for crash landings. Population growth/development is so ridiculously expanding and other total and totally unexpected changes have made GA flying quite different cup of tea than in our past. I think such astronomical and ridiculous population growth and THEIR inherent interests and priorities will, by default, eliminate the freedom to fly as we've known and loved it.

Yes, "child on board" signs vs the old days. True story, around 1960 my three-year-old brother opened the car door, fell out and banged his head on a big rock. (He lived.) Mom's solution so THAT would never happen again: she threw the big rock into the ditch.😃
