okay so context- i've been playing trpgs since first grade (7 years old in the US). recently i've been avoiding dnd content on youtube like the plague. a lot of the people who joined the trpg community since 5e's launch seem to think they know how everything about the game because they've read 2 greentexts on facebook and watch critical role. and consequently, they end up making content that spreads really toxic misinformation and gives really bad advice. i was kind of bracing myself for the worst but this is actually one of the best beginners guide for 5e there is. you clearly have a lot of passion and experience with the game and have done a lot of research. can't wait for more content like this. keep up the good work!

Thank you so much! I know exactly what you mean about D&D content and, even though I'm pretty new to the genre, I feel the same way about a lot of the D&D content that gets suggested to me on KZitem. Don't get me wrong, there's a tonne of great content too. But I get what you're saying!

It's a fair way of creating character, but not exactly the way I usually do it. When I make characters from hand I tend to create something that's always in the same vein. That is why I choose a stat, roll for it twice, record the rolls. Once all stats are rolled for twice I look at what I got. If rolls tend to be on the high end I will either pick lower, higher or average of the two +2. You can pick 1 max roll for 1 lowest or 2 average. This gives me fair amount of flexibility making sure the character isn't an off hand gimp, but most certainly has some visible difference between stats. The important part is that all rolls are pre predesignated. You don't get to minmax off the cuff. Not easily at least. What usually happens is you get 1-2 really high stats 1-2 low stats and around 4 stats that are blend (+0 - +1 bonus range). Having stats you didn't expect initially gets your mind working. Gets you to ask questions. "My construction and wisdom are rediculous, but my charisma is absolutely horrible and everything else is bland. Why?" I am a very wise, durable and weathered person. But why is it nobody ever likes me? Is it gruesome and grotesque scars? Was I an exile ill-equipped for social standarts? What is this set of quirks that makes it hard for me to communicate to others? Question your stats, suddenly you have a character you didn't expect. A wise barbarian highly knowledgeable of his own foreign culture but ignorant of local society, a reclusive mage brow beaten away from society into wilderness by his lack of understanding of any social queues or even exiled for them who compensated by his shortcomings with wealth of arcane knowledge, a sourcerer tortured by gifts of magic and seeking to understand the nature of his powers, jaded, wild and scared by his harsh and missadventerous life. And once the outcome is known... I follow the paths systems from The Burning Wheel character creation process (top-down) discovering sometimes what seems absolutely crazy details. Once again making my mind run wild.

I really like that actually. I actually wanted to try a campaign where everyone has to create characters in a way similar to how you do it. Roll for stats first (in order; so Str -> Dex -> Con etc), then decide what kind of character you are afterward. I always wanted to put a bunch of random tables in from the DM side of things too :P I call it... "Random land". Creative name, I know

Great video! In the past I struggled with players that just didn't have much of an imagination and really no concept of the basic fantasy tropes. I would let them browse through pages of npcs and pre generated characters and then build one using the stats from one, the weapons and equipment from another one and try to make a quick background. Son of the Capt of the guard who will be killed to start the adventure, a disgruntled and abused wizards apprentice, a freshly escaped gladiator, a ranger or druid wandering aimlessly after a red dragon destroyed the glade they were sworn to protect. I try to link a new players character background to the upcoming adventures somehow to make them part of the world. Or brother of one of the established party members.

You could always be like me when I first played dnd, none of us knew how to play DnD, and no one had read any of the phb or basic rules. So we spent about 4 hours researching up stuff and rules because we didn't know about the basic rules.

Haha thanks! I personally love Tabletop Simulator. It's clunky as hell but there's something really enjoyable about being able to actually pick stuff up and roll it. I also really like the idea behind Rolegate but I've never had the opportunity to play a game on it yet. It just seems like a really convenient way to play or DM a casual game
