Am I the only one who thinks this woman is stunning?

No, she looks like she came out of a 17th century painting.

Water mixable oils are real oil paints. There is no water in them. The only difference is that the molecular structure of the oil has been changed to allow water thinning and cleaning.

Not sure if Claesz would paint ala prima, probably not. Old dutch masters used to use layering techniques, with quite transparent shadows. I guess it is a modern interpretation of the subject.

Its Claesz, not Cleasz. But enjoyed the video very much. Rijksmuseum...really should pay a visit again.

Hi Kathleen, thank you for watching the video! We use water mixable oils because it’s easier to clean for us at Rijksmuseum and for you guys watching at home! As a bonus it has less harmful and toxic fumes which is better for us and our environment. Have a nice weekend!

Thanks Yacine! And you're right, I do tend to paint objects from above - my husband's recurring comment on my work exactly! End of the 16th / beginning of the 17th century painters did the same, but not Pieter Claesz and contemporary or later still-life makers.
