The state of SC maintains a statewide Trimble VRS network. There is a reference station in each of the 46 counties. The spacing of the actual towers is 35 to 70 km apart. With a VRS network the virtual base station is at most 10 meters from the location of the receiver when it sends the NMEA position to the server creating the real time corrections. Mount points available to the user include RTCM31, RTCM 23, CMR, CMRplus, CMRx. Data is provided to the user via cellular communications. Have you successfully worked with this type of network?

Wow that's awesome. I have not worked with VRS. I know its available in Texas but I have not looked into it much. My understanding of VRS is that it triangulates your position. Does that sound correct?

If I had two Reach RS+ units, using one as a base and the other as a rover, will the software allow me to tell the base where it is (using benchmark or previously set control point coords)? If so will the base resolve accurately where the rover is located in a timely manner? Also, will the Reach RS+ base communicate with a USGS CORS Station to resolve the base location? If so, it would be interesting to set the base on a benchmark, communicate with a CORS Station and see the difference between the resolved coords and the published benchmark coords. Thanks for your indulgence and your excellent work producing informative videos.

- The M210RTK has a base station that , when in broadcast mode, will broadcast to multiple other bases ( assume P4 RTK does same ) wondering if the Alpha or M+ could be added for Rover and CORS data. Note: M210RTK is relative to its (the UAV) position but the base itself should be accurate for correction sequence would you not think?
@GM6DroneMapping

Thats intresting. Im not sure how the RTK works on the 210 since it is used for position hold not accuracy. But I know that the M+ can be used to make the P4P more accurate so I would imagine the 210 can be modified as well.

If for some reason you didn't have access to the NTRIP service, you could use another Emlid reach as a base correct? How accurate are these measurements? I see others using these like 30k setups which seems insane. Also how do I find out if there is a NTRIP service tower to connect to in my area?
@GM6DroneMapping
5 жыл бұрын
The truth is NTRIP is limited and not the best option. It's the best when it's available but.. Your question is not easy to answer. Yes 2 Reach RS are normally used and depending on how you use them depends on the accuracy. Post processing data with or without using a known point gets different results. 4 & 5cm is normal. You probably would not use Reach to make building corners but since most of us are not licensed to be a surveyors, we wouldn't be trying to make those type of measurements anyway. With that said, I know surveyors that use Reach. They just have a learning curve.
@Codejoy

@@GM6DroneMapping Thanks for the response! My use case is really just GCPs so when I fly a uav for a map I can tell them 'this map should be +- this accurate' or 'this volume measurement should be +- this accurate' Realizing of course I am not a Licensed surveyor, but for informational purposes. Also I would love it to where my progress photos would overlay nicely flight after flight (which I think I would do with nice GCPs measured each flight?) At least this is the aim. Without a second Emlid reach, then NTRIP would be an okay solution for the above purposes perhaps?
@GM6DroneMapping

@@Codejoy I totally get where you're coming from and its a good habit to be as accurate as possible. With one Reach you NTRIP is the best option I am not certain its the only option. Have you looked on Tuffwing.com? They make an adapter you can use to attach the Reach M+ to a Phantom and post process. Its cheaper than two Reach RS receivers. I am planning to make a video on the GCP and PPK process but it will take a while to complete.

Post process or PPK is just a way of using the same math that is used in RTK or Real Time Kinematic. The difference is real Time normally cost money for a subscription service. PPK is getting the data for free from the CORS towers. The data is available an soon as 1 hour (in many places) after you were collecting GPS points

How accurate is the topography with these control points compared to the points placed with total station?
@GM6DroneMapping
4 жыл бұрын
Well that is a good question. I have been working on that very thing. I haven't finished processing the points placed in a grid yet. And I am using Emlid not a Total station, but from what I have seen so far I don't think it will be any different just faster to use the drone instead of manually placing a grid.

TS will be much tighter on the individual points. This is 1cm at best. However, as we’re talking about whether it’s better to have fewer, precise points or more overall accurate points within the given tolerance, I think most surveyors are finding the latter to be more effective surface modeling overall.
@GM6DroneMapping

That pretty much hit the nail on the head. At best 1cm. But if thats all you need its a heck of a lot faster.

@@johnnyabdallahkurybendeck3165 Yes that is all correct. It would be PPK process. However, you can create a known point with PPK then use the internal RTK that the Reach units have. It probably takes just as long but if you return more than once it would be faster.

I’m perfectly happy with anything up to 6cm accuracy, and to buy the base rover setup. Would I be able to consistently get sub 6cm accuracy with this setup? If so, what steps outside of simply collecting the data do I need to perform, and is there a way to verify what the accuracy isn’t? One of my concerns is getting bad data and not knowing it.

You should be able to consistently get 6cm but it depends on a lot of things. You can also check the accuracy but it's not so simple that I can just explain it in text.
