2 years ago I had a brain tumor hemorrhage and spent 9 days in a coma. I ended up losing my job, house, career, and extended family. All I have left is my wife and kids. The last 2 years have been a blessing! I have discovered a passion for baking and painting and combining them in cake decorating. This is the best way to quilt a cake I've seen. You may not be aware, but this is a practical application of calculus and is math in real life and is beautiful. I'll be trying this tomorrow. Thank you

Hi Laura pls I just ran into your tutorial and I must admit this is the easiest, most amazing tutorial on a quilt cake without molds. I have read a couple of comments and I do agree with alot of the positives. My question has to do with making the pattern for a square cake. It looks easier on the circle cake. Could u explain thanks dear 😘
@krazykoolcakes
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mary! Thank you for your comment and positive feedback. Glad you enjoyed the tutorial. Doing this technique on a square cake would actually be just as simple. I would measure the exact length of one side and then divide that by however many lines you want. That will tell you exactly where to place your first lines. Then the rest is simple as you just criss-cross the secondary lines with the first. I hope that makes sense. Thank you for watching! :)

Hi laura! Thanks so much for the response :) i've never used crusting bc, i.always use smbc for all my cakes (a lot of my customers aren't fond of buttercream, they find it too sweet) I've tried refrigerating my cake until its rock hard, but because the weather here in the philippines is most of time, well really hot and.humid, after i take out my cake from the fridge, it always kind of "sweats" and becomes very sticky to work with, sometimes it even tears. I'd still give your technique a try, i have an upcoming order for a cake with that design so i really need to learn how to do it. Btw im a huge fan of yours laura :) i never went to a cake decorating class, the web's been my teacher about everything so far and your videos have always been one of my "go-to's". Amazing! Great way to achieve this pattern. What if you mess up? What if the angle is off and the line is wrong? Would you have to replace the fondant to fix it?
@krazykoolcakes
Жыл бұрын
Thank you Kendy! Glad you enjoyed it! :) If you mess up just make that area the back of the cake. LOL. You wouldn't want to replace the fondant because ripping off the fondant will ruin your icing underneath. As Cake Artists with time we get really good at hiding and disguising our mistakes. If you do mess up, don't let it get you down. Just chalk it up as a lesson learned. Be sure to go slow and make every little movement of your hand on purpose. That will help minimize mess ups. Hope that helps and thanks for watching. :)

@krazykoolcakes
8 жыл бұрын
+barbararodriguez7 Hi Barbara! Yes, that's correct. :) Depending on how many diamond patterns you want you can change how many holes you skip at first. The more holes you skip on the very first line, the more angled the line will be, therefore giving you more diamond patterns. I hope that makes sense? But, the answer to your question is yes. :) Thanks for watching!

Hi laurapoopie, I've been asked to make a wedding cake in December and I've been watching your tutorial on quilting as two of the tiers are quilted, I made a practice cake to see how well I fare but still have a little ways to go. My questions is the cake that I'm making calls for navy blue dragees and quite frankly I have not seen any in that color. I tried painting them-not good-spraying them-not good. Tried royal icing and if I'm not careful it bleeds. Do you know where i can find them in this weird color or so you have any suggestions.

Hi laura! I want to try your technique but i gotta bad feeling about whats gonna happen to my cake if i put pressure on it using the triangle ruler when i make the quilt pattern-- i bet the icing is gona go all.over the place. Like what happens sometimes when im.just smoothing the fondant, little pressure causes some of the icing to sort of "escape" from the bottom. I might be doing something wrong. Any suggestions to avoid this?
@krazykoolcakes

Hi Cathreen, It sounds like you may not be using the right kind of icing. Are you using a crusting buttercream? Also, make sure you cover your cakes when they are rock hard and have been in the fridge for several hours. Hope that helps. :)

Which is why you need to remember not to forget a single pin. LOL. It is 100% perfectly sanitary because they are aluminum just like "cooking toothpicks" and they are perfectly cleaned before and after and are only used for this purpose. If doing this on buttercream do you wait until it is crusted? You mentioned in another comment that it shouldn't be cold, what did you mean by that?
@krazykoolcakes
10 жыл бұрын
You can do this right after you ice when it's still soft. That's the best time to do it. If you wait till it crusts or attempt while cold, the icing will be hard and you won't be able to indent lines into it.

LOL. That's ok. We use silver disco dust then steam. Yes it's ribbon. We just add one dot of glue with a glue gun to the ribbon in the back. The glue is between the ends of ribbon so it never touches the cake. :)

What was it you were saying to put on the little holes and in between the diamonds at the end of the video?

Thank you! I suppose it's just a matter of good icing and fondanting techniques. We have tutorials on both if you'd like to check them out. :)

Hello, I'm a beginner with fondant and your videos are so helpful! But I have a question the last two time that I have tried to do this quilt design on the cake I noticed that is difficult for me because the fondant has already set so it's dry and hard. Is it because I'm not working fast enough? Can you help me ?

HI Anthony! Glad you enjoy the tutorials. It does sound like you are giving the fondant too much time to dry. The key is to try and work as quickly as possible. Hope that helps. :)

Oh got it! Is there anything that I can put on to it so that I am able to put a design on? Or once it's on and dry that's it?

Hi Vishal! Thank you so much! God bless you too! We use buttercream. If you check out any of my icing technique tutorials, you can find the info you need under the "show more" section under the video. :)
