That would work slicker than snot when your moving a yard or pulling rented hives. I moved a bunch of hives out of an almond grove in California years ago. If we would have done that when we started loading the hives we could have recaptured all those lost bees in nucs and made more hives or used them to add to supplement week colonies. Great idea and thanks for sharing.

Well I always thought you were a tree David. It seems I was thinking like a bee! lol You know that new 2 frame hive colony you just created? I don't think 3 pounds will FIT in there - you are going to need to split them pretty soon! Or am I wrong? And by soon, I mean next week. Let them draw out the second frame, fill it with pollen and nectar, and with three pounds of bees doing that they will be in each other's way! lol Amazing. I had no idea you could create a swarm like that - does that mean they are all foragers (no nurse bees)? What happens when she is released and starts laying - do some of the foragers just start doing nurse duties?

At least your warm enough for bees to be active. It hasn't been warm enough in PA for any bees to be flying around. It has been about 40 degrees or higher. It has only been warm enough for ants drinking maple sap. It also snowed Sunday morning and still hasn't melted. At least it wasn't much.

@julieenslow5915

Assuming you are asking David - I rather doubt he could tell you - he's kept bees for years now. But probably a lot less than most people who did what he does. a LOT less. Understand, its less for two reasons - the bees, and David. He really does have the understanding to breed really gentle bees. Its about diversity in the bloodlines, but using bees which are genetically tending to be gentle in the first place as the base of your bloodline. The second thing (ask him, he'll tell you) is that David knows how to handle bees. You will not see him moving quickly, his hands are always there with the bees but moving slowly and non aggressively. The bees have time to get out of the way. This is something experience and time will teach you, if you remember to do it - always. Ask any experienced beekeeper. If they rush, they wear protection.

This seemed like a good idea until you think about it. You will only be collecting field bees which are old. you will have no nurse bees to feed larva or secreat wax. Most of these bees will be dead before the first larva emerge. You will also be collecting field bees from strong and weak hives. If you wanted to do this I would suggest you add a few frames of brood also.

I was surprised at the responses claiming it would not work. I have never tried it, just putting clues together about how workers act when a mated queen is in the air. It stands to reason that they would form a swarm. The only thing I have doubts about is when you are NOT installing a bunch of packages, would it still work? The swarm in the video is residual workers from packages. I wonder if this would produce a swarm if you placed a caged queen in front of a wild bee hive in a tree or house? Even nurse bees do orientation flights, you may get some pretty young workers in the process. @@davidhaught84
