What shall I upcycle next? 😎 Leave a comment and let me know if there is something you would like to learn or something you are struggling with ideas on what to do with it?

Oh that’s an awesome idea! 😍 I got a really cool rug (which i bought) and I think it could be great inspiration for this. It’s both recycled denim and some kind of burlap pleated together and then stitched together with a zig zag stitch in a square going outwards. Don’t know if it makes sense! 😅 Alternatively, I think a classic woven rag rug could work very well if you want it pretty thin and to be able to wash in the machine. I will see what I can do 🤗 Hope you are staying safe too!

I watched this video a lot of times! I started making a round rug like yours and I can't wait to finish it. I'm so happy! now I know how to decorate my room by being eco-friendly. Thank you so much Matti💕

This is great Miss Matti! So clear. I'm going to send this to my local crafting group, who are only just starting to talk about climate change and what they can do to recycle/upcycle and stop putting things in landfill.

Thank you! 😊🙏🏼✨That would be great to get more people to think of the impact we as crafters have on the environment. I truly believe we have a lot of power to make a difference due to our skillsets but we need to teach more people to understand how much went into to make that fabric, what happens once in landfills and what we can do instead. 💕

How durable is the rug? This is really pretty. Does it slip on your floor when you try to walk on it? Also, are you able to wash this in your washing machine?

I find the rug can be slippery on some floors (but if so use a rug anti slip mat) but not on others. It's pretty durable, but I find how durable it is depends on which yarns you use to crochet around the t-shirt yarn. Also I have never machine washed the rug - only hand washed it - not sure if I would dare to try it out. Hope this helps!

Hi there it's great to me too and a big warm welcome from Montreal. this is so beautiful and I've never seen it done before and anything, where you can reuse and bring it together to make something warm and inviting, is so inviting to me. Matti, a question: Could I use this technique with denim “yarn” or cotton strip “yarn” (from old sheets)? Or must the “yarn” come from t-shirt material? Thank you!
@missmatti

Good question! I haven’t tried it but I think it would work really well with denim and/or old bed sheets etc. it will create a firmer feel which might work even better as a rug.

I have a question Miss Matti - in your video on making t-shirt yarn, you're using t-shirts with no side seams and you do mention that it's the same method for t-shirts with side seams but I can't quite figure it how to do it - do you just end up with shorter lengths? All my old t-shirts have side seams and they're piling up waiting for me, so a little tutorial on how do that would be good, please :)

Yes I use shorter ends without the seams. I tried using it with the seams (in some previous projects) and you can but it’s a bit bulky. The rug will look neater without them. It can help using fabric glue connecting the ends. I hope that helps and I will see if I can make a video in the future explaining that clearer 😊

Next time you should try to film the video from your point of view. It will be easier for the viewers to follow the tutorial. Good job!

Thank you! I know I wished I had a set up that allows you to both see from my point of view as well as being comfortable to work with. Working on a solution for it though!

The camera should be in the back of you instead of the front so we can see what you are doing. Also, you should go slower so we can see the stitches and what you are doing. This is suppose to be a teaching video but you are going so fast we cannot see what you are doing.

Thank you for your feedback. I always try to learn & improve my videos. If you found it goes too quickly you can go to the settings symbol under the video and adjust the speed there. I also have written instructions on my blog (www.missmatti.com/how-to-crochet-a-rag-rug-from-t-shirts-scrap-yarn/) which might help you as well. The basic principle is making the same single crochets around the t-shirt yarn (and two single crochet in the increases) so focus on nailing that and you will be able to make your rag rug! Good luck! 😊
