UPDATE: Hi everyone! This video has received a resurgence of interest so I wanted to let you know that I AM making this blanket and will show you the finished project in a few weeks. Here are some answers to your questions in the meantime. The yarn is "Feels Like Butta" and is a sport weight (Med 4) requiring a 4mm hook. I used a 3.75 mm which made each square 4x4 inches. I am making a 3' x 4' FT throw blanket (not including the border) and I will need 108 squares to do this ( width= 9 squares, height =12 squares). Each square takes about 23 yards of yarn. The skeins I have are 218 yards each so I will need 12 Skeins to make this size blanket. Hope

May I ask is that 12 skeins all up & as there’s 5 colours how many of each colour did you need
@PlayHookywithMe
3 жыл бұрын
@@victorialamarque-blair6289 12 skeins total varying the colors . When I bought the yarn at Michaels, the skeins were huge. Each was the equivalent of 3 skeins so I have essentially 15 skeins but definitely don’t need that much. So to answer your question, I would get two of each color (10) then choose a 6th color for the remaining 2 or maybe repeat 1 or 2 colors to reach 12.

I haven't made a granny square in 50+ years but this beautiful pattern has made me rethink them. In my teens I made a blanket for my mom using the standard granny square but ran out of yarn. With no money for more yarn it became what my family jokingly called the "Half-gan". Although my mom has been gone for many years, it still lives on and has warmed laps of our entire extended family over the years. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I just may have to try them again! ♥️

I love this tutorial and I LOOOOVE the colors you chose! I love doing starburst granny squares, but I keep having one issue: when I do my round of puff stitches, I tend to get a gap underneath it, between the puff stitch and double crochet. Your rows are all so tight and neat, and fit against each other so nicely! I'm wondering if I'm pulling too hard on the puff stitch, or if my double crochets aren't tight enough...do you have any words of wisdom you could pass on to a newbie crocheter?
@PlayHookywithMe
3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much - gosh I have to admit I’m not really sure what could be causing that. It could be an issue with tension - maybe a smaller hook size to see if that tightens it up for you ? I use a 3.75 mm eventhough my yarn calls for a 4mm. Maybe someone will read this and have some insights. Keep me posted if you find a resolution ❤️

Beautiful pattern, but I have a question. You said around 20 minutes in that I should connect the trebles going across to the other square, but what do I do when I’m joining my first two squares?? I don’t have another one on the left side like yours yet to be able to go across. Thanks
@PlayHookywithMe
3 жыл бұрын
Thank you , Megan. Okay, when you are first starting , you complete the first square completely (not joining to anything). Grab your next “disc” and complete 3 sides. On the third side , only complete the first 3 trebles in the corner and then attach with your slip stitch to the corner of the first completed square . Then create the next 3 trebles on the new disc you’re working on to continue the joining of the 2 squares together. Finish the 4th side with the join as you go technique. You will keep doing this to join the first row of your blanket., If this doesn’t make sense , please write me over on Instagram in direct messages and I’ll send some photos to help . 💕

Instead of clipping your yarn, you’ll want to chain up to whatever is the first stitch of the round to serve as your first stitch and then work the pattern as normal. If you are starting In an area that is different from where I started, you can slip stitch to the part where you want to begin then continue on with the pattern.

@PlayHookywithMe
Жыл бұрын
Hi M. No , I haven’t found it to ever be an issue using the magic ring/circle vs the chains w/slip stitch because you can control the opening this way. That’s a good question regarding the 1st chain. There isn’t a hard “rule” with this. I think the majority of crocheters I’ve seen use it DON’T count it as the first chain of a ch3 but I often DO count it because it gets me to the height of a double crochet . Sometimes it’s a bit “gappy” for me if I do the chain to secure the ring plus the additional 3. So the short answer is , it’s up to you . 🧶💕 Hope that helps

It’s really just a personal preference. It would have been hard for me to decide too if I’d know about the zig zag stitch when I made this. How many squares for a throw blanket size?
@PlayHookywithMe

For a 4x5 ft throw you’d need roughly 27 squares . With this yarn, my squares are nearly 4”x4” inches.

I don’t like the way you explained it because I was following along with you doing the square and then you jump into how to attach so how I’m going to know how to attach when I only had one square I think you should have explain from the beginning make one square then make the other square and then teach how to attach

Love this so much thank you. I would love to border it but haven't a clue how as shell border doesn't calculate. Anyone can help with this to get a neat edge please? X
@PlayHookywithMe
Жыл бұрын
If you really want to do a shell border , you can make it work … just fudge it a little by skipping a stitch here or there to get the calculations right as you go. I’ve found the best place to do that is before a corner or after. As long as the corners look right, everything else will. If you don’t like that idea, here is the border I added to mine: Easy Block Stitch Border (+ Picot Stitch) kzitem.info/news/bejne/z26n3oJrs4d6raA

How do you weave in the ends with puff stitch? I can't do it without it coming undone or making it look messy...
@PlayHookywithMe
2 жыл бұрын
I would recommend that you take the tail and weave in to a different area away from the puff stitch . Tails hide very well behind the cluster rows .

Hi Roz..Best Granny Tutorial ever!! I learned basic crochet 2 yrs ago- after knitting throughout my life- Im now 65 & i was intimidated to try any Granny Sq pattern- I couldnt get the"ring" idea..Today I sat down, determined to CAL with you this gorgeous sunburst..and Voila- 2hrs later- I completed my first Granny- learned the "ring" your way- just a center really- and I had REAL FUN..I love your method of teaching..I like how you stacked the basic cirles- to crochet the edges later..I like to complete projects- and I had just finished a crocheted tassel afghan 48X60 in..and I wanted to make something that can be pastels- like yours- or boho colors- or even made in OMBRE colors- cuz I have multiple stashes in different clors.. and I just had so much fun- this was a starting point- and Im going to make more squares & use your BLOCK STITCH BORDER because I love how it looks..Im so excited,,Thanks for making this so easy..I cant wait to see what I make!! I love this tutorial but I have a question. My square isn't laying flat what am I doing wrong.? I'm using an H hook and using 4 weight yarn. . It seems over crowed can someone advise me please.
@PlayHookywithMe
3 ай бұрын
You can try going up a hook size to help loosen the stitches - or add a chain in between stitches to help give it more room. It’s easiest to do that in between granny clusters or in the corners . It just sounds like a tension issue so these two suggestions should do the trick 👍🏻

Thank you for sharing a great tutorial ❤. I am interested in making this but, I am new to the crochet world 😊 and I have one question. The finished square is 4"x4". How can I achieve a finished square that measures 5"x5"? What would I need to change in order to achieve this size square? Thank you !
@PlayHookywithMe
Жыл бұрын
You can change the size with the size hook you use and the yarn. A worsted or Aran yarn (weight 4)with a hook size of 5 mm or 5.5mm would probably get you.the hook usually helps make the size grow bigger or smaller 🧶

I’m pretty new to crochet, I’ve never made a granny square before. & I just can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong here. in the first round, I am doing everything exactly as said and it’s still off. so I make the 5 chains and join the loop together, that’s fine, but then when I chain 3 and start double crocheting 15, it’s not coming out right. after making the 15 dc there are not 16 stitches, but 10 or 12, and when I try to make more the number isn’t changing, still 10 or 12. & on the ones where I could get 16 one side is much bulkier and bigger than the other, even though I very much made sure my tension was the exact same. I really can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong, but hopefully someone with more experience can help me out. 🤍

This is strange to me that you are getting 10 or 12 when you dc up to 15. You can record yourself and send it to me if you like. That way I can see what is happening. The bulking on one side has more to do with the accumulation of stitches … sometimes it’s possible to shift them over with your fingers to spread them more evenly . But again it would be easier to tell with video and/or pictures. My Instagram is @playhookywithme
