My BACKPACKING ADVENTURE on LAKE ATITLAN continues in the TOWN of SANTIAGO. I had arrived in Santiago the night before and experienced the vibrant EASTER CELEBRATIONS, now it was time to get a taste of what the town had to offer, and it did not disappoint.
I woke up nice and early at my GUESTHOUSE and headed out with my trusty GO PRO CAMERA, time to see what was on offer in this sleepy town in GUATEMALA. I first headed to the LOCAL MARKET which is located less than 30 seconds from my HOTEL. There is a very large MAYAN community, these people can be identified by the TRADITIONAL clothing they wear. After getting a bite to eat I headed to the main square in the town and got some awesome footage of the old CHURCH.
Next I headed to the local BOATING DOCKS, I had arrived in the town by car so I did not see the DOCKS. They are amazing, awesome views of the LAKE and the VOLCANOS which loom overhead. I really wanted to cross the narrow part of the lake and get to the other side so I could get some awesome footage on Santiago. I enlisted the help of a local FISHERMAN and we agreed on a price to take me across and then back. What can I tell you about the BOAT, it was roughly the size of a coffin for a midget, very small. But I never shy away from adventure so off we went, and this ride in a dodgy boat turned out to be the highlight of my trip.....
