Topaz is definitely an underrated gemstone & being on the moh scale of 8, it is also relatively hard with a high RI values. Interesting cut & the reveal is beautiful with a soft tint of blue 💍💎

Topaz is a precious gem, and has great refractive qualities and is natural. I think I'd rather have a larger well cut piece of topaz instead of a tiny poorly cut diamond. Diamonds have better refractive qualities, but their value is manipulated by the powers that be. I think if the market was flooded with Diamonds I doubt facetors would not bother to cut them due to the hardness anyway.

I love Topaz and White Sapphires, they are far more interesting than diamonds. Diamonds are as common as Bat sh*t. Diamond cartels hoard them by the ton in underground vaults to create artificial scarcity and to create the impression they're rare and special. Imagine if they didn't .... there would be a glut, they'd be really cheap and and treated for what they really are ; common semi precious gemstones.
@FatKidBrody

@@bettybho2168 you can thank Debeers for the hoarding of diamonds. I refuse to set them. I will set a white topaz anytime instead. Thanks to DeBeers stocking even a small quantity of diamonds is more of a security risk than I am willing to take.

Beautiful gem cliff. How long have you been cutting? I know you mentioned in a previous video training under a competition judge for years. How long was it before you started getting this kind of results? How often do you cut and are still unhappy, or less than satisfied perhaps is a better way to put it As I am teaching myself on a homemade machine there is a lot to learn. I'd say I'm currently happy with about 30% or my results. Call it unlucky but I tend to encounter a variety of issues, however the one that gets me is that I am still struggling to final polish properly. All the work for less than desired results and sometime unpolished spots.
@VintageTimeGems
4 жыл бұрын
Probably 2-3 years to get these results that's if you facet regularly each week. Polishing tends to be difficult to master. Stick at it you'll get it right. Takes about 6 months to get used to polishing. Cheers

Another Beautiful gem and I love the care you take with your meetpoints! The thicker girdle looks quite nice with this design too, especially in the corners. Do you ever have a problem with cleavage in topaz? It looked very apparent in the precut but the gem looked completely clear afterwards.
@VintageTimeGems
5 жыл бұрын
Hi, I cut a thicker girdle this time as I want have it set in a pendant. If they are too thin like competition girdles they can chip when aligning the prongs. Yes you saw correctly the cleavage plane. I was aware of it. I've never had issues with cleavage planes in Topaz, but I wouldn't want to cut a table right on it though. My table was cut across that plane, as long as it's not on the same angle as the plane. Cheers
@harlin0
5 жыл бұрын
@@VintageTimeGems Very interesting, thanks for the info. A thicker girdle makes sense now. Especially if the cleavage planes are in the same plane as the girdle facets. Do you do any stone setting yourself? I'd love to see some of your pieces set in jewelry!

I just took a risk and spent $30 USD on a one pound lot of topaz from Brazil. I've dealt with this company before for amethyst and fluorite, and generally there are a few facet-grade stones mixed in with each batch, along with quite a bit that can be made into cabochons. I figured $30 was a pretty good deal if I get the usual 50-100 carats of gem quality material in a topaz lot. Either way, it'll be a learning experience.
@VintageTimeGems
5 жыл бұрын
$30 is cheap. I find that getting hold of larger clean pieces of topaz that will cut 12-15 mm gems is hard to get hold of without paying big bucks (particularly natural light blue). Cheers
