Easier: 1. Make the big circle 2. Duplicate 3. Make the new circle smaller while holding Shift and Ctrl, this way it remains concentric with the big circle 4. Select both circles 5. Path > Difference.

At time 1:51 he says to hold the control key and separate the duplicated circle. Is there a reason to press the control key and drag? I get the same results by just clicking the circle and drag the duplicated circle. I inquiring minds want to know.

This is exactly what I needed. But when I click division, the larger circle disappears and I'm left with the small circle, no ring. What?!? The same thing happened when I tried to make the ring by cropping. Instead of leaving behind a ring, I'm left with the smaller circle. What's happening???

There is a huge diversity in the world. Some people visit the tutorials not knowing what to do; others visit the videos and already know what to do before they click on play. So in making such tutorials, one has to strike an average or medial information content.

Would you like a format where I go straight to the point? This will work as a reminder for experienced users. I am afraid it will not be best for absolute beginners. If many subscribers up vote that, sure I will be doing like 30 second to 1 minute videos for experienced people like you!
