Because it changes direction, why is it not a pocket?

A pocket refers to the ball changing directing when hitting the the net on a side close to the rim. It needs to hit that zone for it to be a fault. The ball will usually change direction towards the centerline when that happens. There's a good diagram of this on page 10 of the USA roundnet ruleset document, pretty easy to find. The cut serve shown here uses side spin to increase its angle away from centerline. It works even if you hit the net dead center.
