Hi Sharon, that’s great it’s working for the cosmos. Let us know how you get on trying it with your dahlias. This has been a good week for the dahlias here so I am looking forward to cutting them for florists this Thursday/Friday x

It is deeper than you would imagine, let me know how you get on trying it out. You can always just cut one or two like that to try until you see it working and then cut more like that in future.

Hello, last year I started attempting to grow single Dahlias from seed (for pollinators) and now this year Pom Pom Dahlias as these are supposed to be excellent for cut flowers for the home gardener. Late winter here 🇦🇺😊

Hello thanks so much for watching and I hope your winter has been ok so far. Not long until spring for you now and everything getting back growing. Pom Pom dahlias do make excellent cut flowers. I have tried growing dahlias from seed for the first time this year and have been really pleased to see that they do produce flowers well in their first year. I wasn’t sure that that would happen so it’s great being able to do that from seed.

Thank you once again for such a helpful video, Catherine.💚Your dahlias are so exquisite. You are certainly good at growing them, as well as all of your other plants. That deep red ball pom pom dahlia, is a stunner; simply gorgeous! I love its shape and colour. I am busy ordering my dahlias right now, here in subtropical Qld.Aust. I planted about 8 varieties and left them in the ground to over winter. Bad mistake!!! I found a rotten tuber yesterday, more than likely caused by too much rain, and extra watering when my husband set the irrigation to go off to water all of my young seedlings. 🌱🦋I'm not sure how many are tubers are viable. It makes you feel quite disheartened. It doesn't matter as now I know to not plant them there anymore. 🙂😊🌺

Oh no it’s so disheartening when you lose things flower growing. I hope some of the tubers have made it. It’s always so tempting to leave them in at the end of the season as such a lot of work to get them lifted, dried off and stored but I think the wet would get to mine too. I have accidentally left the odd one by mistake and they haven’t survived. I hope you get some nice new dahlias ordered. Shopping for dahlias is fun, spoilt for choice!

Super video, here in Berkshire we are getting ready for our Village Show and in the flower arranging category there is one for Dahlias. So your tips for picking are very helpful.

Actually won, with best in show and for the first time ever won the Flowers Cup after ten years! There were 10 entries in the dahlia section and names on the cup go back to 1984.🙂

Thanks so much for watching in Glasgow 😊 I am glad you are finding the videos helpful. It has been a bit of a tricky summer again for growing flowers with such a dry June and very very wet July. Although August has been a bit drier. Has it been just as wet for you in Glasgow?

Lovely Dahlias Catherine and good information. Can you please tell me what size organza bags do you use?
@cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm
Жыл бұрын
Thank you 😊 I use 20 x 30cm organza bags. I have tried smaller ones before as when you pop them on the bud is small but when the dahlia gets bigger and opens out it can fill a small bag and it’s difficult to then remove that over the top of the flower head without bruising the petals. So the larger ones work better for me.

Great video again on how and where to cut the flower. It does seem very drastic but I’ve done it with the cosmos so I’ll try it now with the dahlias. The ones in the video had two side shoots on, Will you cut these off or just leave on the stem as I imagine they won’t open in the vase now they’ve been cut. Deb
@cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm
Жыл бұрын
Hi Deb, thanks for watching. It does seem quite drastic but it really does make a difference. They do grow new long stems with new flowers and the plants are more productive than if you just snip a flower with a wee bit of stem at the top. It depends on the arrangement whether I keep the side buds on. If it suits the arrangement and they look nice I will keep them on although they won’t open but more often than not I remove them as it’s easier to place a dahlia in an arrangement without them.

Great video very useful. Do you add anything to the water asI have heard lemon and sugar with aspirin helps?
@cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm
Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for watching. Yes lots of people like to add a variety of things to the water to get the best vase life possible. I have never personally done this as I opt for just really clean buckets, vases and fresh water. Renewing the water every couple of days in an arrangement and recutting the stems then.

As an afterthought question, will the buds flower from this first deep cut and have a shorter flower stem as a consequence or will the plant regrow several sets of leaves and then put up flower buds?
@cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm
Жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for watching this week 😊 The plant will grow new sets of leaves and nice long stems with new flowers. When I cut that deep the side buds come away with the flower I am cutting and these side buds won’t open. They are sacrificed so you will get new longer stems with new good flowers on them.
@mariebutler6912

Hi, do you keep the side buds on when you've cut or do you remove them?
@cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm
Жыл бұрын
Hi, when I cut the side buds come away with the main flower. They won’t open in a vase so I often remove them if it’s easier for me to place a dahlia in an arrangement without those side buds. Occasionally if it’s a looser arrangement and the side buds look good I will keep them on.
