I fully agree with the concept of deadheading. I believe that it is best done just as soon as the bloom fades, two or three days after it blooms. There is no need to cut the stem back, just twist off the old bloom and the plant with rebloom in two weeks. I have had my plant put on over 200 blossoms repeating every two weeks for the entire season. The stems will just extend and add new blooms.

Now I’m sorta new to planting but I’ve planted some gladiolus bulbs I got late in the spring. I am aware you should plant most bulbs in fall the year before you want them to bloom but I moved in my current place in the middle of winter but still wanted some color to my new beds. Understanding that these gladiolus bulbs reproduce I believe just by splitting baby bulbs in the ground. Can I still dead head them once a year to get two bloom cycles of do only certain perinnials only bloom twice? And do gladiolus plants have seeds if not dead headed.

@GardenContinuumINC

Once the stem is "complete" - meaning there are no more buds (maybe even no seed pods) - these stalks get cut off too. Sometimes the dead flowers drop in a way that doesn't allow a seed pod to form. No worries - just clip the empty stem and you're done.

@GardenContinuumINC
5 жыл бұрын
In most of our gardens, we cut back the bulk of the foliage in the fall season. Our clean up time here in Massachusetts is between Halloween and Thanksgiving. That's also when we plant the bulk of our bulbs and pull the fall annuals out. It's a busy time in the garden.
@flickeringcandle

For a cleaned up look during winter, you can clear out all the dead day-lilies leaves after they have turned brown. Or, you can wait until beginning of Spring before new growth begins. I usually clean it up in late winter on a sunny day just for a reason to be outside. Then the plants are ready whenever Spring begins. Once brown, the plant is dormant and it does not matter when, just do it before new growth.

All plants that flower - Angiosperms - produce buds, flowers, and seeds of some sort. Some are small and unnoticeable, some are big and heavy. It just depends on the plant in question. Take a closer look and you'll see the seeds on daylilies, astilbes, baptisia, coneflower, sunflower and more. That brown you see when the flower fades, it usually holding the seed in there somewhere!

@GardenContinuumINC

rockmom h Totally normal. If you leave the stems and seed pods to ripen, this is exactly how it works. The plant spends energy ripening the seeds and then the whole apparatus dies back. Plant lives on! You just get fewer flowers when it’s a repeat bloomer. Single bloomers don’t bloom more if you deadhead, they just look neater. Sounds like you have a healthy plant. Garden On!

Sharing my response from a couple of years ago: Seed saving is great. Agreed. One pod has many seeds. If your garden is like mine - with maybe a hundred daylilies, each making 20 pods, each pod having 30+ seeds, it would be a new career. So sure, if you want to seed save that is great, but as a gardener, there are some impracticality in too much "saving". Also, I'll share that I have no idea how to get a daylily seed to germinate. Maybe easy, but since they do not "self-seed" readily, I have to believe there is a more complicated process in their germination. Daylilies are a plant that is most quickly shared with friends by dividing the plant. They grow fast and huge, so need dividing every 3 to 5 years.

Yes, but... If you want new plants somewhere else use the seeds your existing plant is producing. Make sure the seeds have ripened-usually black and hard. Sprinkle the seeds, cover with a little soil and lightly water them in a bit in early fall. Now, the existing plant does not need its seeds to grow again. It grows again from its root system and a healthy root system will survive the winter (I'm in zone 6B). You want to keep in mind that to get a healthy plant that grows next season and produces prolific blooms, you have to take care of the root system first. Direct sunshine, water, soil that can drain, food-fertilizer, and deadheading as you saw in this video, and you will or should be fine.

Hi Jason, This was filmed in August when the Stella D'Oros and Happy Returns had already been blooming for months. I waited on purpose so that you could see the impact of the deadheading. @@JasonSmith-qx3zh Hey Jason. I'm in Massachusetts so the answer is no on transplanting perennials (including daylilies) this time of year. The plants are dormant, but the soil can freeze and thaw and the plant can get heaved out of the ground and struggle to stay properly hydrated if you move it now. In my area (all of the Northeast region) I'd recommend waiting until March and plan on getting all dividing and moving of perennials done by the end of April if you can (May at the latest) - in an ideal world.

My friend planted a small bed by my patio with this lily and some purple irises because I love those. I know it’s about time to divide these bulbs after they bloom and I know absolutely nothing about this.
