My parents accept me doing cosplays, but just not in public because they don't want anyone to hate on me and hurt my feelings, Which is understandable I guess. But they say I'm allowed to do cosplays for conventions and I can do public cosplays with my friends. So that's better I guess! ^_^

I'm so glad you explained it as a craft because up until this point I figured it was just like getting to dress up for halloween and I would cringe at the people who just throw "crap" on. But having it explained this way puts it in a different perspective. Making your OWN costume is def. way harder than buying one and adding accessories. That being said, the costumes dont need to be "perfect" because like you said, it is a craft/ art not a superficial fashion show. Thank you :D

It saddens me that so many parents seem to be against cosplay. My mum LOVES it. And awesome video Twin, very informative :)

I actually showed my parents that it can be therapeutic. I cosplay as america and I am a Veteran, doing this has helped me to deal with all of the things that happened overseas. Cosplaying the character has helped me to cope with loss and to cope with the hard decisions that had to be made. For me it really isn't a hobby anymore but therapy.

Twin your really inspirational, and I'm sure a lot of people say that. My father hates anime in the first place, so even discussing cosplay is a hassle. Due to a few personal issues, I ended up having to go into homeschool for high school. My parents were always accepting of the hobby, because I've always had a huge imagination, I always ran around in my halloween costumes all year round, I always enjoyed making things and had a huge artistic side. However, my friends from school I expected to be less supportive. I reconnected with them about a year or two ago, and to my surprise - most of them thought it was an interesting, cool hobby. :)

And, I, too, purchase and make my own cosplays and, actually what I absolutely love most about cosplaying is being able to cosplay in the general public (even though you'll get weird/evil stares and comments) and just acting like whom you're representing and stuff. To me, it kind of tells society that you don't care what they think - you're free to do as you please without consequence (except killing people, etc.)

Twin, you rock. This is a great topic for you to address. :) Personally, I hope that in Part 2+, you might get to talk about "cosplay elitists", who can be pretty hateful themselves: You're not good enough at sewing, you should be more detailed or accurate, you're not asian, you should only cosplay if you're entering the masquerade... etcetera. What are some good responses to those kind of cosplayers?

Sadly, I haven't been able to cosplay at all yet, because I have zero sewing skills and I just don't have the money for it, but someday I would really like to cosplay or even just go to cons in general. I know several people that do and they love it. One friend of mine, her parents are very accepting of her cosplaying. Her dad doesn't really like to get dressed up, he is more of a picture taking kind of guy. Her mom loves to cosplay and they always go to our local convention as a family every year. With my mom, she doesn't mind that I'm interested in it, but she is still a bit apprehensive. Thankfully my mom is extremely supportive.

My parents actually appreciated the fact that I was incredibly talented to think of such things. My older sister actually bragged about some of my costumes, my neighbors encourage me. It's a hobby I enjoy doing. The negative reactions some people get don't deserve it. You spend hours making a cosplay look perfect, but once you premiere it you might get that one person that might say "oh look at her/him they are too fat", or "They don't have the right color eyes/hair/fabric.

My own quick thoughts: cosplaying is essentially a form of acting, and acting is an art. And, as you said, it is about crafting, a form of *visual* art. Because it's an artform, it should be supported and encouraged. If my kid comes up to me someday and says he wants to dress up as So-n-So from Such-n-Such, I'll be the first to help him do the research so he can be the best damn So-n-So out there!

My mom and dad were werided out by it and thought it was a sexual thing too.. but it changed last year when they came up to one of the cons where I live and they were so shocked at how wrong they were about people and myself doing cosplay. Yes there are weridos in the cosplay world but they are so welcoming of it now and are so excited when I ask them to help me make cosplays.

i wasn't as lucky as many of you lol Imma tell you all a small story.. one of my parents wasn't accepting it at all.. it was pretty awful and humiliating to say the least, i was away for months in my home country, as i come back she and some of my family were wating at the airport, i could've easily hidden everything to avoid trouble but i decided that i wanted to see what they thought.. i was proud about it why not ? , sadly it went as bad as i could think off, at the first second she saw me wearing what i was wearing she got mad and stripped me off half of what i was wearing without saying a word, almost as she didn't want for people to see her next to me while me wearing that.. since that day i never really felt like wearing anything different again cause she will bitch annoyingly till i take it off, I'm sort off planning on doing it again especially now that i know that there is cons out there.. all i could really say about this is that people will always bitch and complain about something perhaps they're afraid of doing it themselves and they wanna tell who ever does that they cant doit, now that I'm a lot older i realize that any of you should do what you want when you want and if they don't like it screw them.

I know how you feel :( My mom's not to fond of me doing cosplay. Hey, but, who cares if your mom gets embarassed about it? If it's a hobby that you enjoy doing and it makes you happy, you should keep on doing it., it's your cosplay, not your mom's.

Wow!!! :O What a very depressing and shocking story! I literally cannot believe how meaningless your mom was for doing that and gripping about it! Seriously, as I've said in the comments above, parents and people in general need to get their own brains checked and stop being trolls over the things we do. As one of my good friends used to tell me- When we Cosplay, it's not like we're using drugs or doing anything illegal.

I will be cosplaying for the first time in August with some of my friends. I'm not actually going to tell my parents because I know they will react badly. (It was bad enough when they found out I had brought anime with my own money) They think that i should have a 'normal' hobby, which unfortunately for me is sport. But Hooray! For anyone's whose parents are perfectly fine with it!!!! :D :D

In Britain, Cosplay and Anime is not well known, and so people see my cosplay obsession as weird, including kid's in my school. But my friends and me really enjoy doing it, and no-ones going to put us off it! EVER! My parents support me, and my mum loves my Cosplay and enjoys taking photo's of me and my friends all dressed up XD Cosplaying is hella fun! It's awesome!

i'm so going to be on the look out for more of your videos on this topic :) i'm a new cosplayer and i got a list of people to cosplay as and which conventions i want to go with my friends to. any advice for a new cosplayer? or advice for going to a convention for the first time?

My mom took it pretty well when I first told her I was a cosplayer and that I was going to a convention with my group, though she gave me a 'what the heck is cosplay?' look. Now she asked if she could come with me to the next convention with me this October and is helping me find good cosply wigs and cosplays. My dad on the other hand still thinks I'm weird for cosplaying (mainly because I cosplay males) and for likeing anime/manga.

not only is it acting, it's also crafts and design when you make your costume and confidence when you go out and do it in public and express your inner manga/anime freak.

I think you cosplayers are freaking great! Who the heck doesn't like people who dress up like awesome cartoons. And you guys must be rich as hell because you have so many costumes!

My parents are accepting of the fact that I cosplay. Last Christmas my father, stepmother, and my step grandparents brought me an Undertaker cosplay and wig. They try understanding what cosplay is and I think they're proud of the fact that I'm not going out doing drugs or whatever.
