A healthy attitude to mistakes in music allows you to play freely, fearlessly and with true enjoyment - without compromising the quality of your performance.
Lots of musicians torture themselves because of their negative view of mistakes. This is so unnecessary. It’s possible to treat mistakes as normal while still caring about playing music to the peak of your ability. If you can make this switch, you'll enjoy playing music much more as a result - and you'll actually find that you make fewer mistakes as well!
It’s inevitable that you’ll make mistakes. You need to accept this.
It doesn’t mean that you get sloppy with your playing, or that don’t care enough to put in your full effort. It doesn’t mean that you won’t learn from mistakes so that you make fewer of them in the future.
But it does mean that you don’t inflict pain on yourself when you miss a note or make any other mistake. You accept that it happened and move on.
Playing music is physically very challenging. You’re never going to be able to eliminate EVERY chance of a mistake. And if you want to be truly creative then you need to push the boundaries a little rather than just playing it safe.
If you believe that making mistakes is somehow "wrong", you're going to suffer throughout the whole time you play music. But if you accept mistakes as normal then this opens up the possibility that playing music can be pure joy pretty much all the time.
