As someone who has avoided this joseki in order to avoid this exact invasion, thank you so much for this!!

Sensed that Q17 was coming as the response to white's 3-3 but was really hoping it wasn't going to be the suggested reply as I don't think I would ever have spotted that in actual play.

Hi Michael ! Thanks a lot for this video which is really great ! What about Black R11 instead of R10 to avoid this invasion ?

That is an option in the given board position.

Hello Michael! Here you say that if white plays the 3-3 invasion after black's Q11 kosumi, you say that black should not play the usual descent at P18. This makes sense. But what if white plays these moves in the opposite order, i.e., W 3-3 B descent W invades the side at R12? In this case, clearly black should not play that same kosumi at Q11. I would guess that black should simply take profit in the corner by killing white efficiently, but how should black do this? I'm thinking of moves like S14, S15, or maybe even R13. What do you recommend? Thanks!

Good point. I would suggest Black S15, White P12, Black P10.

Thanks for the explanation. A related question here: Given the whole board position, is this the best invasion for white?

Invading on the left side was also an option

If Black invaded H17, would the diagonal G16 be good, or would H16 be better in that case for White?
@MichaelRedmondsGoTV

White H16 or H15, that is probably a bad invasion for Black.

What happens if black plays on top with q12 instead of the diagonal move? A common mistake, I think?
@MichaelRedmondsGoTV
3 жыл бұрын
That is not necessarily a mistake but depends on a number of factors to make it a good move. With the idea that I wanted to present the viewer with something that can be remembered and then used in actual games, I limited the video to the one variation that works most of the time.

This is definitely not a video for people just learning. Check out some of the early videos from Nick Sibicky or thedudhha2 if you already have a grasp of the rules. The most important thing is to just play games, don't worry about winning, just see what works. It's a hard game but infinitely rewarding.

at 3.57, with w S13, w lives in sente! surely that isn't good for black? or it's not sente?? if b tenuki, w p13, black may be able to live both sides but w can push b around can't he? maybe w p13 is not a good idea, just creates a target? sigh.... it's all too complicated for me; if only it were as simple as 911 to solve
@MichaelRedmondsGoTV

Black has sente. If White P13 later, Black can play away again or answer at O12. Black is alive on both sides already and has no worries.

@@MichaelRedmondsGoTV thank you... so not only is w P13 not a threat - it's not even sente! In science, every discovery raises 1001 new questions... but only these jump out at me off the bat (hopefully they are useful questions): Q1: To know that if w invades, black can take sente by choosing the sequence you showed, does black need to be able to read 15+ moves or is there a static pattern (a heuristic) way to look at it when deciding whether to play b R10 in the first place? Q2: I seem to remember reading somewhere that during the opening, sente is worth about 30 points. Would you agree? Q3: If the answer to Q2 is "yes", does that mean that white's invasion at R12 was premature, since w had sente to make it, but gave it away to black by invading? Q4: You say: "If w P13, b tenuki or O12"... O12!, not Q13.... i'm stuck in the mud again; i can't see why b Q13 isn't right and although i can see the solidity and utility of O12 once it's there i can't see how to imagine b O12 as a solid reply to w P13 - it feels like there's a basic principle behind O12 which makes it a sounder choice than, eg, P11, but aside from iron pillars i can't see what that principle might be. help!
