My parents were pack rats and didn't ever let me put things on the wall or even paint because of "resale value." They also didn't let me shed anything I'd outgrown, so I didn't have enough storage for what I was required to keep in my room. 😅 Still recovering. But I also have a DEEP abiding hatred for both unintentional clutter and unadorned flat white walls. Puts me weirdly within and at odds with both Minimalism and Maximalism. It also makes me *exactly* opposite of the pop-of-color school of boho. But, hey - I guess that's what forces unique design decisions.

I grew up in a lovely home that was clean, neat, and so fraught with anxiety I couldn't move sometimes. When I left home it was several years of going crazy with the messiness before I got to my own style and comfort level. It's better to let kids find their own way in their rooms, at least to a certain extent. Then we know how to care for a place when we grow up.

I am an old hippie & have always loved the eclectic boho style of decorating. That said, I have to admit that now that I’ve just turned 70, boho is a lot of work! Lots of dusting all the wonderful things I’ve collected over a lifetime of traveling, lots of ‘things’ to move around. But alas, it’s the time in my life to purge! Sad but true. I’ve got no boho sisters or brothers to pass my treasures onto, no kids, no friends of like decorating style! Poor me.☹️😊 I still love the style, though. And…boho is not for dog lovers! Too much fur to constantly clean off all the beautiful eclectic stuff!😩

I can’t tell you how much this video helped me to bring together a bunch of different ideas that were in my mind... For years, I tried and failed to give my bedroom a “vacation/escape” feeling. Fast forward, my husband is a 2 time cancer survivor before age 40 and I have a small child. My bedroom theme turned into given-up mom. Then, my father passed away and I am going through his items. In this emotional mess, I watched this video, not sure if it would fit me since I haven’t really been able to travel due to my life taking me on so many other pathways. However, something clicked. My dad was a talented painter and a collector. His collection of old albums, the souvenirs he brought back when he traveled for work, all my sentimental pieces, my rattan hatbox from when I went to Florida, mismatched wood tones could work in boho. I even have an old rug in the basement. My cheap black dresser is getting a DIY makeover and my husband is cutting our old vinyl tufted headboard off and making us a new one out of wood. I am sharing this with you because I am a new subscriber and wanted to say thank you and I wanted to let everyone know the big thing that clicked with me while watching this video is that boho isn’t only for the wanderlust travelers, it is for anyone who wants to tell the story of their life’s journey through objects in their design.

LOL My version of BOHO from the eyes of a 71 year old forever hippie. I have always done my version of boho. Some because when I was first on my own I just had to use whatever I could to make it work. SO over 50+ years and countless moves and life changes my boho has evolved to what it is now. I just feel at home in my space. Many are shocked because I am old and supposed to be grown up. Hahahaha Never going to happen. And after watching the last, to me video of yours, I cracked up because I did make the mistake of buying that marshmellow loveseat. OMG what a mistake. Well last year I took it aart. Removed much of the arm stuffing did some reworking on the frame and stapled it back together. Gained at least 8 more inches space in my room. I had a blast.

I think the only reason I've instead leaned into wanting to go mininalist is to avoid having to dust or clean a lot of things, XD! And organization, which right now, spaces like my bedroom are an organied mess (ask me where something is, I am usually 99% correct on the general whereabouts it's at, but don't ask me for precise coordinates 😂). Being in someone else's boho space would be cool, but I hate all the trinkets and busy designs the style requires :) It's pretty, though! Just on a practical standpoint, I'd feel overwhelmed with it.

Boho is in every “Old French” family home I know. What with our colonialist history, and the almighty French passport, lots of French folks naturally grow this style into their home after some travelling-or some antique thrifting. African masks, Indonesian statues, Pakistani textiles, Peruvian ponchos, Moroccan tea sets, Japanese screens, and of course jewellery from all over….

I've had designer friends tell me I am Boho, but I never had the chips to fully embrace it. Thank you, thank you! (My SpaceX- loving engineer hubby will love using a mural of the Carina nebula for the kitchen backsplash. I'm going to do it!)

I live a boho lifestyle (I travel a lot), but like the cleaner scandi look. What is the best way to display my travel souvenirs that doesnt make my home look too boho and follows a cleaner asthetic?

Would you put Modern Mediterranean/ Tuscan within Boho? I look for Mediterranean or Tuscan and it feels very 'cliche' whenever I look at inspiration. Or maybe its just not how I remember it when traveling in the past. I think Boho would be the closest, but less saturated Moroccan and more neutral. Just trying to figure out where I might land. Thanks!

Yes and I know that because I had always been Boho and I actually have some Tuscan and Moroccan pieces in my decor. Boho can be a mix of whatever you like put together cohesively, or not.

So I think my style is farmhouse, arts and crafts boho, but I do live in a 200 year old English cottage :-) I love William Morris, John Sankey and Arne Jacobsen but all still works.

Nick, I love your style videos. Even though I am not usually drawn to the boho style, I love knowing about it and seeing the great examples you show. Your breakdown of each style is spot on in my estimation. I have been a student of interior design my whole life and I sure wish I could have had you as a teacher! Thanks so much for all the work you put into your videos.

Give up....boho is me!! My brain says “go minimal”. But I can’t resist a pink silk Indian cushion & the plush purple velvet cushion next to it......& i’ve got it all....& more. Hey, its colourful, fun & brings happy vibes. Yep, boho for me!!!

I am very drawn into boho mid century modern interior design but less clutter. I love mixing old (our Vestervig Erickson 1960 dinning chair) & new ( Rh oak dinning table). Mixing different culture like Moroccan Rug, Herman Miller Emma’s Chair, Nepali Thanka Paintings etc. And yes lots of plants. I think It helps to create & bring in your style, heritage & somewhat identity. Even though I love mid century, Scandinavian & Japandi style but I think I will always incorporate boho design to bring some of those element of own style. Loving your content & its helping me create some mood board for the house we will be building.

BOHO=NFM(not for me)-lmfao. However, I'll always love anything natural like natural woven rugs, wicker, old rustic wood pieces such as old antique crates and boxes. I do also like the indoor plants. I personally love the bland white and gray and minimal design mixed with a few true rustic antique pieces that adds some cool American history.

I love your channel Nick. I have seen some super busy boho chic designs. But as a “bc” person myself, I find cottage core to throw me back in time to a period I can’t quite pinpoint. I like it, but then I don’t. I always would feel like I’m in a really cute bed and breakfast that I’d be ready to leave after a few days. It gives me Jessica Fletchers house. But I guess some design style is regional. She lived in Maine. However I could see a boho chic living room and a cottage core kitchen in the same home actually. 😳

When it comes to colors how do you make sure things are the right tones? And how strict should you be? I’m always afraid to get things with color because I don’t know if the hue will work, especially when I’m traveling and can’t see my space. Along the travel line, how do you keep boho from looking kitschy? I have so many found treasures from different countries that I’ve started to put in boxes because my windowsills and shelves have gotten so cluttered with things like wood carvings, puzzle boxes, and small artisanal dishes. I’ll stop buying them but I don’t want to get rid of what I already have.

How restrained can boho be and still be boho? I love a LOT about boho, but many times it seems over the top and unliveable to me. Too chaotic to live with on a daily basis. I do love color, but not random color. I like a good tree as much as the next person, but I don't want to live in a jungle. I enjoy my baskets, but don't want my home to feel like an Ihuatzio basket factory. I love some patterns, but not too many at a time, please. Layering rugs, no, no, no! I want to see my rug! I really don't enjoy the self-conscious, just-out-of-college, "I'm so creative" vibe of some boho. And yet it still seems potentially the most engaging style, allowing the greatest leeway for mixing in some elements of other styles, such as vintage pieces alongside clean lined upholstered pieces. I guess it strikes me as the most forgiving, and I do need that! (And no doubt my cats would love to have more cane, wicker, and rattan to destroy!) My problem is that I love bits and pieces of most design styles, but none in their entirety. So given its innate eclecticism, boho probably comes closest.

I want to add: The hippies used natural items... wood wicker rock metal plants shells rope. No plastic. Everything was used. Old stuff. Macrame to hold plants. They liked art and music and used it in their decor. They loved fringe. Add fringe to drapes & chair pads. Fringed leather suede purses. Vests. Patches: patch pillows & patch skirts & patch curtains.

I like Boho, specially textures, pattern but my personal style is keeping neutral color just with few color accents, not fan of rattan but love leather, so my space is more a personal boho transitional vintage 😆, but I feel it cozy personal but not funky.

Great video, thanks! Just one thing: the apartment that the photo at 06:39 is from (which was featured in The Design Files a couple of years ago) is not Boho at all, but is the quintessential scandinavian place. Warm "falu" reds, Louisiana posters (from the museum of modern art, not the Us state), white floorboards, retro danish furniture and lamps...

Since Boho can be eclectic do you its ok to mix boho with glam? I really like both styles, but full glam spaces feel like its too much.

Hello Nick, I enjoyed your video very much. My husband and I just sold our little eight room motel, two houses and an apartment. We are living in an apartment currently as we are looking to buy or build, not sure which. Our rooms at our motel were themed rooms and I really enjoyed decorating them. During the last seven years owning all that, I kinda lost my style. But I’m fairly sure I’m boho. I really like the colors and textures and I’m kinda hippy. And after watching your video, I believe I’ve got a plan now. Thanks so much! Enjoyed it! Oh, I found it funny, you mentioned Lone fox and one other and I watch both of them!!! Ha!! ❤️💜💚
